February 1st may be cold around here, but things should heat up on this run as we go in search of goodies for our loved ones for the upcoming Valentine’s Day celebration. We will start at the Lowe’s parking lot off University Parkway in Winston-Salem and loop around the east side of Hanging Rock State Park on our way north. We’ll continue on Hwy 8 up through Stuart, Virginia (Virginia is for Lovers right?) before heading up into the mountains.

Our first stop, if their parking lot can handle the group, will be Lover’s Leap Birdhouses where you’ll have a chance to find a home for some lovebirds. After that, we’ll continue on up the twisties to Nancy’s Candy Company near the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway. This will give you a chance to shop for some sweets for your sweetie.

Instead of hopping on the BRP, we’ll parallel it until we turn back south on Squirrel Spur Road as we head back home. We’ll take in some of Hwy 66 before stopping in Rural Hall for some lunch at Frank’s Restaurant, a little Italian place. Because Italian is the language of amore!

Come alone and grab a surprise for your honey! Or come together and enjoy a day together!

Here is a gpx file of the route (http://www.tarheelminis.org/2014_events/thmmc_be_mine_rally.gpx) along with printable directions in pdf format (http://www.tarheelminis.org/2014_events/thmmc_be_mine_rally_route_sheet.pdf).

Starting Point: Lowe’s, 5901 University Parkway, Winston-Salem NC
Driver’s Meeting: 9:45 am
“Wheel’s Up”: 10:00 am
First Stop (Lover’s Leap Birdhouses): 11:15 am
Second Stop (Nancy’s Candy Company): 12:15 pm

I'm planning to join the run. Anybody have a suggestion of good radio to buy?

jcauseyfd
January 23rd, 2014, 05:51 PM
Pretty much whatever you can find at any of the big box stores will work fine. Actual performance is so different from the claims on the packaging that I don't think there is really much difference. Motorola is probably the most popular and easiest to find. Cobra and Midland also work. Make sure they can handle the sub/privacy channels. I'd probably lean heavily toward some that come with a charging stand so you can recharge them. I think some of the more expensive versions include the ability to charge via a cable plugged in to the car's outlet. I usually have plenty of charge left after a typical run, but the stand makes it easy to pop them in afterward.

Depending on whether you have a passenger to handle radio duties, it may be worth it to also get headphones/earbuds and a mic. The earbuds help make it easier to hear amidst the wind noise (though in early Feb there is a good likelihood windows will be up) and a mic may make it easier to operate and drive at the same time.

Someone posted online a couple days ago about Sam's having them for a good price. Cheaper than walk mart. I'm not sure if that would be all over or just by the person who posted.

This is what we are using. Haven't had any range or voice quality issues. They have lithium ion batteries and managed to last 2 days at MSSD without needing a recharge. I have used the Motorola ones at work and the batteries after a month would not hold a charge more than 5 minutes.

Taking the MINI WUF into Luxury Auto Service in the morning. Getting a carbon cleaning done, check for software updates, and new oil pan gasket. Hopefully that will at least slow down my oil leak if not eliminate it. Not sure they realize the pressure is on to have me on the road for Saturday morning.

If all goes well, we're going to have a friend along to shoot some video of the group along the way. David Weatherly is an emmy award winning video journalist/producer with Fox8WGHP High Point. You may be familiar with his Roy's Folks syndicated series that just celebrated 25 years. David and his son have a MINIata and will be tagging along with us for some fun! We're pleased to welcome him to the Run! B-)

Hopefully any residual ice will melt off today, but there could still be slick spots at the higher elevations, especially in shady stretches of road. I also anticipate we'll be dealing with lots of salt, sand, and whatever that pebble stuff is that Virginia uses.

Been in contact with Lover's Leap Birdhouses since the turnout is a bit higher than I anticipated. They indicate their parking lot can handle 20 vehicles (not sure whether that is MINI-sized or regular-sized vehicles). We may not all be able to stop in there at the same time, so we'll have a little travel coordination challenge to deal with. Looks like there is a place where folks could pull off and wait around the next corner (can't tell from street view what is is) or we might send them on to Nancy's for an extended visit there (the two locations are only a few minutes apart).

Hahaha Mr. Jim....Sorry, Didn't really mean to hog the camera guy but well.... it was tough work, and someone had to do it..... We doubled back and played hopscotch with David numerous times so he could get the cars coming by in some good twistys. As David is an avid BMW 1100 cyclist and MINIata owner, he knows all these roads quite well and where to go. With a little advance planning he was able to position for the shots. Not sure who had more fun yesterday, us in the MINIs or David! He was having an awesome time and I am pretty certain the results are going to be nothing less than spectacular. Davids interviewing skills and great demeanor make everything just such a natural and it was amazing to see such a professional at work! So glad we had this opportunity and such great weather to be around!

The Routing was a blast and Thank you to Jeff Causey The Routemaster Deluxe for making it happen! Glad to have you back in the saddle again brother! We have missed your awesome talents!
We had a few little issues with Quark but we got him back together at the end of Elastic Road with some bungy cords and he rolled on back to Jacksonville with only a few more "Minor" adjustments. Thank Goodness Patrick carries a toolbox in the car for Quark! He had plenty of support from his loyal crew and backup help. (Everyone got out and read vinyl on the cars and asked him regularly "How much longer do you think it will take?" for moral support) Pretty much chanting "We're here for you bro, but we ain't really wanting to get our hands too dirty if you think you got it" :)
