Well, to my suprise after driving with economy tires for so long with my old Cavalier, my tires need replacing after a 9,000 mile rotation and 22,000 miles total. I'm down to Lincoln's hair on the rear and half of that in the front. Does this sound unreasonable for the all season Dunlops?

For those of you who have bought cars with runflats and no spare and have replaced those tires with non runflats, what protection do you keep in the car for flat tires?

I'm trying to figure out what I want to do. Ever since I've bought the car I've planned on buying 17" wheels and tires, but didin't think the oppertunity would come this fast. I figured they'd last untill I deploy next year and I could save for the new wheels and tires while I'm gone.

1. Suck it up and pay $720+mounting fees for the 16" Dunlops when I take the car to the dealer next week for the flywheel.

2. Buy new summer tires for about $360-$400 from the tire rack and hope they last till I deploy then buy the new wheels and tires when I get back. Would also have to rely on a local tire shop being able to mount them competently.

3. Buy new wheels and tires from the dealer (would like the 17" Polished R99s or the 18" black JCW wheels). Would be a ton of money, but I'd have the reassurance of the runflats, and factory mounting. Would be dipping into my savings way more than I'd really like to.

4. Buy new wheels and tire combo from the TireRack and have them mounted for free by knowledgable people. Looking at the Gram Lights 57c and 57s and Kumho Ecsta SPTs. Still would take a chunk out of savings, but less then MINI wheels.

I really like those 17" R99s and 18" JCWs

I ditched my runflats for BF Goodrich G-Force Sports and I really like them. Bullfrog has the same tires in 15's. For protection I have a slime kit I got from harbor freight. It has a can of slime, an air compressor that runs off the cig. lighter and some other stuff that fits inside the back panels on the sides of the boot.

Just my 2 copper bits.

Thanks, I think I've decided on the Kumho SPTs, though. I just have to find a quality tire shop to install them. There seem to be a lot of shady places here in Fayetteville

I'll wait to get the wheels next year

Dan can install tires if you want to come up here to Thomasville. He's an authorized Tire Rack installer I believe.

Closest size I can get is 205/50 16.

*Edit - Awesome news, thanks!
