View Full Version : Blimey's Gonna Get a Nose Job

Why? An encounter with a big cardboard box containing a giant agricultural equipment air filter at 70mph on I-95 this morning...

Yeah... that's oil leaking from somewhere.... the thing banged the bumper lip back far enough to crunch the AC condenser... and it stuck in my right front wheel well and ground off the inside sidewall of my tire...
Now in Mr. Zipkin's very capable hands... he will be better, stronger, faster...

Blimey has my condolences. Here's wishing for a speedy recovery. Just be careful what you promise the ma... er, Mr. Zipkin, in exchange for the new powers.

Ouch,
Does the GP have working brake ducts in the front, something to consider. Aero kit front facsia would be another option.
Hope Blimey gets better soon.

Definitely doing the Aero bumper cover and grilles... which I've wanted for a while... I like my fog lights, so I'm gonna do different brake ducts...

Paul look at the GP for sale on this site it looks like tiny fog lights inside of a brake duct on the front.

Out of adversity comes the opportunity for aero kit.

Paul,
That is a bummer. I baby my car and still have one ding that is hard to find but bothers me to no end. I would hate to have anything so destructive happen. Once had a truck hat I enjoyed get the door crunched by a pole in the middle of grass that I didn't see when turning. Made me feel sick inside and the truck was only 2 months old.
If you are doing the aero bumper, where are you going to get it painted. I have spoken to Kenny Hawkins and I am considering them but have not taken my parts to them yet to get a quote. Just seeing where else I may be able to go here in the triangle.
Glad to hear Dan is going to take care of it for you. I still have to get over to him to get some toys I have been amassing installed.
BlimeyCabrio
November 18th, 2008, 04:17 PM
The GP brake ducts are non-functional, though they look cool. A few folks have modified them to actually function.
I'm gonna see what Dan recommends for paint on the bumper... if he has someone he knows will do a good job, I'll have him handle it turn-key. Otherwise I may talk to Kenny Hawkins...

Yeah.... I keep telling myself that, trying to stay positive... but I'm already in withdrawal.... the only time I've been without the car in the past two years was when I was on vacation.... will probably have to drive several hundred miles later this week in the cheapest POS rental I can get... grrrrr....

From meeting Paul a couple of times at the Brier creek events, and reading his posts here and on NAM, I wonder if this wasn't planned.
Paul, you weren't driving on the shoulder were you?

Hey Paul, sorry to hear about the car. Your pain is just another reminder of how strongly we connect with these cars.
My MINI's just sitting in the parking lot waiting for my ACL to heal for the next week or so. I have a car that needs exercise, and it sounds like you're going to need a car. PM or call me if you're interested in a short term exchange.

Wow - incredibly generous offer.... but I would never rub another man's rubarb.... You're car is waiting for YOU.... not me.
Absence will make my heart grow fonder... if that's possible...

This woulda been a dang fine time to repaint my strut bar.... I almost took it off last weekend to do it, but ran outta time... If I happen by Dan's shop later this week, I might pick it up...
(In case anyone is wondering... YES my strut bar is already powdercoated red... but it isn't the *right* red to match the rest of my red.... so I'm re-doing it... yes, I'm a maniac)

If you find a good place to have your aero bumper painted, let me know. I have one sitting here waiting for a point job. I have the BASF paint code for the trim paint if you need it also. I don't mind Kenny Hawkins but I got this feeling there going to be a little expensive.
X5JR
November 18th, 2008, 06:04 PM
"Good" is expensive and long-term, it is not. I learned my lesson with my '71 Porsche. I ended up taking it to 3 different paint shops before it was done, nearly 3 years. And, I am still not 100% satisfied. It seems every time I tried to save money, it ended up costing me more. Like my Dad always said, do it right or don't do it at all. That is how I learned not to do it at all. Not sure, I got the lesson quite right.

I am dealing exclusively with Kenny Hawkins... Since the insurance pays for it and all you have is your deductible, just take it to the best... So far, from what I have been dealing with, Kenny Hawkins seems like the place to go.

Oh, It's gonna rock... just wish it was the "one-afternoon-bolt-on-a-new-bumper-and-motor" kinda mod, vs. the "parked-for-an-indefinite-period-of-time" kinda mod...
And now I need to make a new UJ grille...

The new lower grille is about 1/2" thick and very sturdy. Not anything like the one you had. It's also very hard to take off after its on.

Oh man, I sympathize greatly Paul. I considered the aero kit when I was healing up my curb encounter recently as well. Initially I wasn't that fond of them, but they've grown on me now, I dig'em. I'm glad it wasn't more severe and didn't involve a spin out in the middle of the highway or something.

Lee/Paul, Might be an IE v6 thing, I can't see them at work or home and if I click on them it locks up IE.
Dan, You are one of the few people I know who's worse than me, and we all love that about you!
I did in fact wear a banana hammock back in the '80s when I was into the South Beach scene--single, well paid, travelling to Miami for work, had the red Haliburton attache case, black leather luggage, Gucci everything from shades to socks--always rented a Mustang convertible, man I thought I was Don Johnson! ;-) If only the ladies had, too!
