View Full Version : Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season?

I have been tinkering with the idea of purchasing a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season performance tires to replace the Dunlop Sp9000 run flats. I know that the run flats cannot be injected with the fix-a-flat sealant because it could gum up the direct TPMS sensor, so why have hard run flats when you would probably face the same situation if you had a flat.
I like the idea of having a smoother yet aggressive ride when so desired.
Any comments, pro or con?

a) Run flats are bad and should be taken off and spanked.
b) I haven't run them, but Paul/BlimeyCabrio and others who's choices are well respected have run them and liked them, so I'd say...
GO FOR IT!

I continue to be a BIG fan of the F1 All Season - mine are wearing very well, grip like crazy at low to mid temps (certainly up into the 70's and low 80's), and are fantastic in the wet.
Only downsides:
1) They're noisier than some tires (but quieter than others) - my Nitto Neo Gens are silent by comparison. But they're not so noisy that you hear them in the car all the time... especially if you have a hardtop.
2) The are NOT summer tires and are NOT track tires. So you will NOT get "ultimate" grip with them above the mid 80's... and if you drive them really hard during the summer or at a track day anytime, they will heat up and wear QUICKLY... I think Gary pretty much chewed up his set at a track day.
Personally, I run these from late fall to early spring, then run summer tires the rest of the year. But they're a great year-round tire as long as you understand their limits and they fit your driving style (i.e. you aren't a maniac).

For an all season tire you might take a look at the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S, we have them on the wife's 3 series and they are very quiet, long wearing and a good handeling tire. If you want a tire a little stickier but still does very well in the rain try an Exalto PE2, both have a very good ride and you really can't go wrong with either one. :yes4:

I just joined your site, but have owned my Mini for 8 months. I was wanting to know, if you had your choice of any wheel and any tire; what size, brand and type would you put on your car. I'm fixing to get some new tires, and really don't know what I want to put. I have the 17" Pirelli Run Flats right now.
Thanks

I've been running the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01's, and find them great tires for the street and very sticky on track. Only count on around 10-12k miles out of a set, but that would include maybe half a dozen or so track weekends.........
Best thing to do is read the user reviews on Tire Rack site, get opinions from folks like us.

Well, I did not pursue new tires when I had the TPMS sensors put in. However, I will address this issue somewhere down the road. These are my second run flats and I must say that the Continental Conti Sports were a much better ride than the Dunlop SP 9000's. Having said that I'm not sure if I'm ever going to use run flats again. I think the Bridgestones and Goodyear F1's are not a bad choice. I've had some experience with other Goodyear products in the past, and they do get a little rough as you accumulate the miles. I'm no where near a tire expert, just my opinion.

Wow just got a set of REO1R's for my track wheels and as Catseye says, man do they stick. For an all around tire that rides good all the way to the end and wears and sticks well too... It's going to be hard to beat the Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2..:yes4:

I wore out the original runflats at 14k miles-BALD! Put the Goodyear F1's on in Nov. and had so much increase in grip that the torque -steer was so much more noticable I thought something was out of alignement. Everything checked out (an alignement had been done with the F1 install) just a completely different drive. The acceleration and grip where noticably improved over even the new runflats, but the handling behavior was different ( run flats had stiffer sidewall )-after 200 miles I was used to the 'new ride' and appreciate - I would guess 15% smoother ride- wished I made the change sooner. After reading Blimey's post about warm weather, I will probably switch come summer.

I run Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs, and they're an incredibly sticky set of tires, though terrible in the snow. Tirerack compared them to the RE-01Rs mentioned above. My previous tires were Bridgestone Potenza RE050As, and I got about 28,000 miles of maniac driving. They were quiet, sticky, and smooth. Also expensive, but they lasted longer than the 22k I got out of the stock runflats. They came standard on my boss's Porsche, if that tells you anything.

Still loving mine. They should be just about done by the time my warm weather tires go back on. My tire guy will hate me (because he hates installing them) but I suspect I will replace them with another set of the same...

Anyone have a good source for the F1's? For 17" wheels are you guys running 205/45's or 215/45's? Seems a lot of folks on NAM are running 215/45's?
thx,

I have had mine for about 3k and I really like them - provided good grip in the "winter" weather we were just having. Really enjoying them as of now - I'm running the 215/45 - 17

I switched from the F1's after 20K miles to the New Eagle RS-A, great tyre but a bit pricey @300each - but great in snow, and pretty sticky in the turns...Also had some Conti's...okay typre - but noisy - car sounded like a 4x4 on the highway - Arrghh!
The trick with the runflats is very frequent rotation - like @1000 miles - Big difference in wear and life.

I bought a set of the F-1s a few months ago (205/55R-16). Have 7k on them and they are doing great. Just finished a trip to Atlanta last weekend. Went down through the NC/GA mountains where they zipped through the curves, and came back the snowy Saturday where they didn't slip once. I love 'em.
Blimey, what do you put on for the spring and summer? Those Neo Gens?
