My wife and I are planning a trip to Williamsburg and DC in October.

We have booked our room in Williamsburg, but we are still shopping for the DC area.

Having never been to DC other than a daytrip or passing through on the Interstate, we are looking for recommendations.

Do you stay outside of DC and take the metro into town, or suck it up and pay out the butt for a hotel in town.

One place that I've read good reviews on is the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University. All of the reviews that I have read have been very positive except for the area it is in. The university property is completely enclosed by fencing, gated and you pass through a guard house to enter and exit. But the surrounding neighborhood is drugs, prostitutes and thugs.

Anyone have any recommendations on lodgging in DC?

Not a big time traveler to DC, but...

- if you are going to do the sightseeing, then plan on lots of walking. Lots. So, that may be an argument for finding a place right in downtown that you can crash at right away.

- if you do a downtown hotel and have to use one of their parking decks, you are probably looking at $30+ per night in parking fees.

- as noted, the cost is a lot more downtown. But when I was up there a couple months ago, some of the folks at the conference were reporting excellent hotel prices by booking via Orbitz or Travelocity.

- eating anywhere in the downtown area is going to be expensive.

- you can find a nice route for going up or down to DC on my blog.

I have stayed at Kellogg before as well, I think it is accurate, I was always nervous walking to the metro station. If you are planning on staying at the end of metro lines, keep in mind you have to pay for parking there too. It is a long train ride in too! Good luck on your searches.

Alexandria might be an option. There are hotels within walking distance of the Metro stations, plus Alexandria is interesting itself. And some of the hotels in downtown DC stay booked solid on weekdays, but offer cheaper rates for the weekends, if you happen to be going on a weekend.

I travel to DC often and recommend you find a hotel near the metro and ride the train in and around the city. It is easy, clean, safe and, with a little navigational sense, you can feel comfortable with travel realitively quick.

The hotel I recommend in town is the Sheraton National. Somewhat reasonable rates . . less expensive than most for the close-in location. Near Pentagon, Arlington and convenient to the city for driving in and around the area.

Let me know if you have questions and I'll be happy to try to help.
