View Full Version : Meets for the Local Region Members Raleigh
surreptitious
October 8th, 2006, 02:31 AM
I am new to the Mini and Clubs Scene and to the NC area, Raleigh, and noticed that most of the events and meets were in the Western Regions, Is there, or could there be a local Regional meets, ie eastern "Raleigh" Area, and or a Northern or Southern Regions of the state? How would I contact other Members in this Region? I would like to Meet others. Thanks

If anyone ever wants to have an event or meeting in the RDU area please, by all means, let me know and I'll send out an email. I've been trying a long time to get things started up in that area for everyone to have some sort of get together. All anyone has to do is post it in the suggested events section of the forum.

If you can help us scope out locations for Raleigh Area meets I know I'm all for it. I just don't know the area well enough.
To keep this On Topic, I hope to take tomorrow night and edit down some photos too. I didn't realize we took so many.

Helmut from Apex/Cary suggested a "Tour de Plume" which would be a ride around Lake Jordon and in view of the cooling towers at the nuke plant. We went by there last year when we ate at Kirk's greek restaurant in Apex.

I have a crazy schedule with work and vacations next two months - but starting in July I'd like to help organize more regular Triangle area activities as we are getting a number of Raleigh/Cary/Apex/Holly Springs etc. members. I'd be all for a Tour de Steam Plume (which is my regular weekend run) and also putting together some others. Also organizing a regular (though maybe not weekly yet) meet similar to Manic Mondays. I'd love to get a headcount of "active" or "desiring to be active" Triangle members who would participate in more Triangle events... chime in if you're interested and paying attention... :)

Count me in! I like heading out west but it'd also be nice to do some stuff around here (Triangle) as well.

We could also motor up to Fearrington village by Jordan lake- there are a bunch of cool shops up in that location and it is a nice drive.

OK - let's revive this thread and move our planning over here.
Seems like Triangle membership and interest is growing to the point that we can make some Triangle area meets happen more frequently.
I'd love to see us get to the point that we're scheduling a drive every month or two, and a meet-and-eat dinner monthly or twice a month. Maybe we start slow and work up to that.
So far, the following folks have expressed an interest:
BlimeyCabrio
bintliff25
mrry550
Hets
CooperSKart
oznogonzo
Eepers (I'm assuming this one)
That's starting to look like a group... I need to do a better job of tagging cars when I see them with the THM cards to drive more local interest - I'm going to write a note on the back of these that we'll be organizing local drives and events, and my contact info... anyone else who wants to do the same, GREAT.
We've discussed the Tour de Steam Plume (about 45 mile loop around Shearon Harris Nuclear plant - nice twisties, little traffic on most parts), a run our around Jordan Lake and Fearrington, maybe incorporating an outing at the New Hope Valley Railway, and some runs north of Raleigh (some nice roads up there as well). There's lots of good driving in this part of the state - you just have to look for it. :)
Anyone else interested, chime in and add your thoughts and suggestions.

I think it would be a good idea to do a monthly meeting of some sort (or more often, depending on interest). We could do a drive and then wind up at a restaurant somewhere to talk.
In all honesty, I've only seen two other minis here in Cary... and I bet you at least one of them is already on this board. :D :D :D

Monthly meet would be a great thing.
There are more around that you'd think. I know there are at least 4 or 5 in the Holly Springs area. And I saw 5 during lunch one day last week driving from MacGregor to the Waverly Chik-Fil-A and back. That's the most I've seen in such a short time and space in the Raleigh/Cary area (other than the meet at Xios last fall...)

I think my neighbors still think we are "bad" people because we came in with the mini and immediately hung a pirate flag on the side of our porch (we just moved here from Miami). We are in a sea of minivans in my neighborhood. :D
I'm up for a drive sometime soon. What kind of timing do you think we should give this? Did you mention you were busy until July?

I suggest we pick a date in late May or early June for a drive and a meal... My schedule is crazy buy I can probably make something work if we hold it to a few hours total for this first one.

Yeah we'd love to have some more activity in the Raleigh area as well as a few other parts of the state. We've got a few events coming up that are keeping me busy, but I'd be glad to help out in any way possible for this too.
Hets no longer owns a MINI but is still an active enthusiast and has mentioned a really cool idea for somewhere to have a meet in the Raleigh area.
There is also a new member in that area that owns a stereo shop and car wash on 15-501 and he has offered to hold an event there. Finding a location shouldn't be much of a problem, so let me know how I can help with that.

I just got off the phone with Bruce Mueller in Durham, he is a GP owner and owner of a first class stereo shop with full car wash (and 4 detailing bays). He would like to do something on a Sunday (I will leave it to him to pick a date). He has a customer/friend with a museum of a car collection (Porsche, Ferrari, etc--you get the point) and would like to to a car wash/detail and audio clinic in the morning, and lunch at this guys "garage?"
I think early June would be ideal. I will help him pick a date, but if there are any suggested days, lets hear them now... I'm excited

Hey Dan, sounds like he knows the Porsche guy that Hets was going to try to get us hooked up with. I think it sounds like a great day and I'd love for us to try to plan it out. Maybe we should try for July at this point though. Other than the 4th I can't think of any events we have planned in July yet. I think more people will show up and we'll be able to help out more by then.

Hi all,
discussed with Drew some time ago about the Ingram collection... there will be a charity concours at the collection... expect it to be a sportscar concours with an open house of the collection (best Porsche/European Sportscar collection that exist in the Carolinas (the Porsche piece is probably one of the best worldwide...).

There is quite a lot of space in front of the Museum, should be a great day...

Sounds Great, But I have tried to get this going Last Year, With this club and the the M2C2 club, but the a lot people I meet in the clubs, expressed interest, but did, would, should, could, etc... not, get together, or want to do anything, not wanting to waist more then two months time pursuing this. I focused on my cars and work. I have since bought a second 06 MCS Convertible, and tricked out my 03 MCS (Motoring Underground ? style), I have since spotted, meet and given out dozens of the "spotted your mini, tar heel cards" All interested, your different reasons, offered to help with installation or Mod the Mini, in the area but no follow up. I know that the Durham, has a lot of Minis, the college crowd has several in the Chapel Hill area, Raleigh, Wake Forest, Apex have a few Minis around.
The Manic Monday sounds Great, 21 May 07 (Out of state 13-18 May) The Briar Creek area is an easily accessed area Central located, for access from Durham, near the Raleigh Durham Aiport (RDU), very close to Research Triangle Park, (RTP), next to 540, 40, 70, has over 50 places to eat, huge parking lots, It's a newly built area (5+ years old) safe, I could meet and and assist with this, however, I may not be available every Monday, due to work and an oncall sked. an Idea to breath life into this and keep it alive would be to rotate meeting areas, weekly based on location of most attendees, Just let me know, I'll be there, Regards, bintliff25

bintliff - great!
I understand your frustration with trying to get things going last year. I think there's a bit larger base of potential participants now than even a year ago (self included). I don't see us getting to the activity level of the core Triad group soon - but a monthly meeting/event would be a great thing. And I think that's doable...

The trick, bintliff25, is to find at least one other person willing to come on a regular basis. I think you may have found one in Blimey. :D You guys start as 1-2 cars and post up about it here and people will start showing up. That's what it took here in the Triad. I tried for nearly a year on and off with bi-weekly meets til HPUDrew just said, "Hey, Let's do the weekly thing. If it flies great, if not we'll just meet and have a beer once a week." And even if it ends up being the same 2 people every week you're doing something Mini related. The other key seems to be location. Try something centrally located or near a highway. Something easy to get to with a variety of food (if you want it to be a food/dinner thing) We Mini people love our food. :D
Oh and I wanna see the 03 MCS.

Griff has the right idea, just pick a place, tell us where and see who shows.
Drew, I will ask Bruce to call you, and we'll pick a day in July (not the weekend of the 4th). It may be the same guy Hets knows, I don't think there are too many world class car collecions in Durham! Perhaps it can be a second change sort of thing for anyone who misses the concours.

Talked to the president of the Porsche Club yesterday, he would be happy to have Mini's join the Charity Concours. (will be at the parking lot in front of the collection). The current plan is to have Porsche/Ferrari/British Car Club presented showing their cars....
I will have Drew/Mark contact him directly in case of interest. Shold be cool to have a couple of Minis as part of the Concours...

I would like meet and or go to the Durham, stereo shop, and talk to start to setup a monthly Sunday meeting.
Hets, I would like to attend the concourse would it be possible to find out more, were when, possible meet......
Thanks, for the postitive input..... Hope to see somebody there

Hey, I have a friend with connections at the Mud Bug (?) baseball team that plays just outside Raleigh in some small town. Nice details, huh? ;-) Anyway, he's going to write it down for me and I'll fix this, just wanted to put it out there.
The idea is that we could drive to one of their Sunday 2pm games, park and sit together, and locals can eat dinner if they want and those like me can head back home afterwards.
Let me know if there's any interest and I'll organize it, once Drew/Griff sanction it.
(I'll be out of town till next week, will check back then.)

That would be the Mudcats, they play at 5 County Stadium just east of Zebulon off Hwy 264. There is a water tower painted to look like a baseball. I would think a Durham Bulls game would be a much closer event for most everyone.

Blimey and All,
RudyT chiming in here. I starting reading this thread and would love to join in on the fun. Hard core MINI owner coming from the Goldsboro area starting around the end of June (not there yet as I am transitioning from Germany). MINI expected to arrive in America around end of July / first part of August time frame. I plan on being very active as I was in Germany. I wouldn't be apposed to traveling to RTP even before I get my ride. Please add my name to the list. I look forward to meeting you all.

You guess correct on the USAF. Seymour Johnson AFB located in Goldsboro gave it away. My checkmate should be getting shipped around the second week of June.
However, that won't stop me from being active in the club. There's always shotgun :)
