We plan on doing a few drives to VIR next year and want your input. Please look over the schedule at the VIR web site and post below the events you would like to attend. If we can get a group of 10 or more, we can see about getting discount tickets and plan the event far enough ahead so that more members can attend.

I know there is a great event on Thanksgiving weekend. Is there any interest in going that weekend as a club?

We usually travel up in a group and if at all possible we get a few laps on the track if they allow it those days. I'll check with Lee Davis at Flow and see what else.

Called Lee Davis and Flow might make this a rally from the dealership. He's also checking on a 20 min session for a parade lap @ $20 a car (maybe less). Also 4 instructed track sessions for $150.

More updates soon...

Mark, you know I'm up for any way we can manage to get out on the track, at VIR, CMP, you name it. I think going up as a group to watch Rolex or Grand AM would be fun, too. The more established clubs (Tarheel BMWCCA, Porsche, etc) have DE events, and maybe one day we'll grow into that. For now, it's wonderful that Tarheel BMWCCA has allowed MINI's to join, and that Flow helps us enjoy VIR Club days. Let me know if I can help.

(I wonder what it costs to rent VIR North Course for a day?)

Hi all - if we can get track time - I am in - I have always wanted to do VIR since I moved here a year ago. I think these are great ideas and hope the interest level is there to make it work. :)

Keep us posted! I penciled in the 25th and will leave it open. I just put on the winter tires, but I don't mind putting the Rewinds back on if we get to go to VIR. I'd like to see a bunch of us up there.

Just ordered a new Bell G4 today...yes, I'm old school! Needed a black one to match the black top on the MINI!

BTW, I'm not going to cord my run flats, given that we're daisy chained behind instructors, right? ;-)

Bronte should be broken in by then. Just picked her up last Thursday! :D

I drove CMP at the Phil Wicks Driving Academy. My Honda got some great track time, but it drove nothing compared to my instructor's JCW! Probably why I decided to buy a MINI!

Okay folks here is the info passed from Lee Davis to me.

Flow will not be there to help but will offer us instructed track time.
DOWNLOAD THIS PDF (http://www.tarheelminis.org/uploads/FLOW-VIR.pdf).

I will not be able to attend because of an engagement that has come up in the last few days. However, I will be planning a full club outing to VIR in the springtime.

This from Lee Davis:

It's not looking good for me on the 25th.

What if I got some touring laps for those wanting to go up on Saturday? That way they could leave here around 9-10 AM and get there before noon when is usually when they would allow this to happen.

If someone wants to do a driving day, they will need to arrive at the track by 8:30 AM. They could do that either day. That's two sessions in the AM and two in the afternoon. Cost is $150 for the day.

Lee
We are still looking into touring laps around noon. I'll post that soon.

This from VIR MEMBER SERVICES:

Hi Mark,

Flow has a corporate membership. The cost is $5000 per year. This entitles them to 2 named individuals on their membership, plus 10 tickets to our spectator events, and of course other little things.

If you go that route, you can only name two people and their families as members. Everyone else can come as your guests (within reason). On member driving days, only members can drive in a passing group with the right driving credentials. All others must drive in touring lights group, which behind a pace car, no passing and highway speed. The cost for driving days run $125-$150 per day per person depending on what day it falls on.( this is not included on a corporate membership.)

Your group can get discounts to spectator events, if you have over 10 people coming.

Mark, it just depends on what you are looking for….I will be more than happy to talk to you “live” if you wish.

I'd like to help out or take the lead on that event when I get back. I really want to do a track day, and since I really want to I figured it'd only be fair if I planned / help plan the event. Do you know if we would be able to avoid the "touring lights group" limitations of highway speeds for a club event in the spring? I'd like to be able to do some high speed laps / get some instruction to make it more fun. If you don't know, let me know who I need to talk with about that and I'll get in touch with them in February, thanks.

Lets talk about this when you can.

MORE INFORMATION

Just got off the phone with Gena Dristall, the club director. Her point
is there is not enough time at the club events to guarantee a time that
the MINI's could take a pace lap. As soon as one group is over, another
one goes immedialely out - -and that's assuming there's no yellow flags
or a clean-up. The corner workers must be present, and they only get a
short break right around noon for lunch.

Of course, anyone with the group would be allowed free entry to the
event and the facilities. It's just that to make it fair to everyone,
they would need to sign up as a Member Guest to drive on the track. She
did say they would allow a special one scession for $50. Of course they
would need to reserve that in advance and attend the driver's meeting at
8:30.

Gena said that we could schedule some free pace laps with the SCCA at
one of their events next year like we've done in the past. Their
schedule is more flexable.

Let me know what you want to do. If you think a group would go up the
scenic backroads and just observe a club day, we can do that and leave
out between 9:00-10:00. We'll take the best backroads and they could
have lunch with the club members. Otherwise it looks like they need to
sign up for a Member Day to drive on the track next week-end.

I think this VIR excursion is a bust and we should look at a more relaxed event in the spring where we have time to plan such a day. I'm sorry that most of the info came to late.

Just got back in town, my Bell G4 was here, I was wound up and now this! I guess I'll live...maybe I can get these lead shoes (run flats) off by then!

BTW, I'll be at Dan's Wed am for a CAI and boost guage install if anybody's around.

The dates that the Tarheel Chaprt of the BMWCCA has reserved for driving schools are 2-4 of March and dates in July and September. Was the club planning on tagging along for one of these, or just use BMWCCA's membership to squeeze in our own dates?
