Are there any other things planned during this time slot or is it just this run? Like, is there going to be a choice of three things to do or this?

Not saying this doesn't sound fun, it does, but I'm just kind of afraid to commit to one thing before knowing what and if there are other options... you know?

Yes, it is the same Dragon. The sport bikes go way too fast, and most of the riders can't handle the curves.

Sitting on the side of the road with thirty minis while the first four in the group got tickets. I don't think you really missed it in a bad way. 70 in 55 for them, btw

Having paid a ticket or two in my time and knowing a lawyer will be needed to make the tickets "go away" so to speak I would say if we each donated around $10 (approx. 30 or so of us in the line of cars) to each of the ticketee's that should come very close to covering the costs. It could have been any of us up toward the front and most of that group helped put together the excellent weekend we all enjoyed. I will be mailing my $40 out tomorrow and I hope every one in the line will give what they can.

Hey guys, I just want to throw my two cents out there on this one. I didn't go to the Dragon but I heard about the events that transpired. If you were fortunate enough not to get a ticket and you feel a little guilty, please by all means send your contribution. My plea below should not stop you from doing so, and I respect your charity.

However, I don't think anyone should feel any obligation towards this cause. Yes, we all travel as a group, but every single driver out there should feel personally responsible for his or her actions. Nobody is forcing anyone to drive fast - the ice cream wasn't going anywhere. Please understand that we do a lot of drives, all year round, and sometimes you may find yourself driving faster than the legal speed limit. If you're not comfortable assuming the risk of getting a ticket, please hang towards the back of the pack and drive at your own pace. There's two things here that I want to make clear are not obligations: you are not required to drive fast, and you are not required to pay for other people's speeding tickets. These are personal decisions that fall on your shoulders and yours alone.

If the club compels drivers to break the law to enjoy the company of others, I'm not comfortable with that. This is a slippery slope, and I don't want anyone to forget that every time you pull out of your driveway, you should feel personally responsible for your safety, the safety of your passengers and other drivers, and the well-being of your vehicle. The club should not ask you to break the law or endanger yourself, so please understand that those decisions are your own personal responsibility. I say this with greater consequences in mind, which anyone who went to the spring Dragon witnessed. I think a lot of good decisions and a little luck have kept us safe ? let?s not push that. Driving a car on public roads is one of the most dangerous modes of transportation. Please don?t forget that when you take the wheel.

I know sometimes the meaning of things gets lost on the internet, so please feel free to PM or e-mail me if I have offended. I know the lead drivers will appreciate your help with the financial burden. On future drives, though, have fun but don't lose track of what we're doing.

Ben is a wise young man. We (HR MINI) had a run down to the OBX over the summer. The group leading was clipping along at a VERY good pace. One I wouldn't necessarily run on the interstate, let alone on 168. So about 5 of us dropped back and just rode a while. I felt better and we got there as they were walking into the restaurant. Having said that we did get a little carried away on the way to the Fall Colors Run this weekend, but I try not to let that happen. I do feel sorry for the guys that got the tickets. It really does suck. Been there, paid that! Thankfully they didn't write anyone for racing. We had that up here a few years ago with some Honda owners. Then again, I'd write 'em a ticket just for driving a Honda!

Good luck with the out come guys.

Well said Ben.. Like he said, I knew and know the risks I take on the road.. I'm not happy about my ticket, but it could have happened at anytime.. That is my first ticket in the MINI ( not counting the warning ticket for illegal tint )
I'll probably think twice about that on the next drive, or atleast fall further back in the line!!!! Thanks for any help anyone wants to give.

Well said Ben sometimes it takes a incident like this to get us to think about our own actions. I have been very fortunate to have not had a moving violation in a log time. I will keep this in mind on future drives and save the crazy stuff for the track. Donation sent...

Thanks Ben. I totally agree. It was my choice to drive the speed I did and I knew better. I haven't had a ticket in 25+ years and this one just confirms that I should go back to my previous personal limits on what speed I am most comfortable driving (at least on open four lane roads). I appreciate everyone's desire to contribute but I would rather see donations go to good causes rather than an unwise decision on my part.

October 27th, 2009, 09:03 AM
Ben makes some very good points so let me clarify this is a personal choice and please don't feel obligated. These were my feelings (not based on logic or the law) on the matter and it's my feelings that led me to my decision. I kinda feel like I'm in group therapy now.
