FWIW - Rudy T and I are gonna leave the Raleigh area pretty early Friday AM and my current INSANE plan is to drive all the way to Murphy, then do the Murphy-to-Fontana route. Which is nuts... and I may give up and decide I'm ready to take the "short cut" to Fontana and have a beer instead of driving 6 hours so I can drive three more hours so i can have a beer....but if anyone wants to tag along on part of my 9 hour tour, feel free.

10am or later would be better for us. We will be in Asheville on Thursday night and drive to Murphy on Friday morning. From Google map, Asheville to Murphy takes about 2hr. So I will leave Asheville no later than 8am. Hope that OK with you and Van.

I saw the question earlier... but what hotel will you be leaving from? After reading about Blimey's insanity I'm thinking that maybe I could make this work. Maybe I can change my first stop so that I can start a little further north. Have to do some maps up. Also, if you can leave at 10am instead that would maybe work better.

Hmmmm.... previously when I mapped this, Google Maps routed it with no problem... now it says the road doesn't go all the way through... what gives???? Google can't see the section of Beaver Dam road that crosses the NC/TN state line and T's into River Rd... hmmm... I hope it's really there... long way to back-track...

Paul,

I note that on Google there is another break in Beaver Dam Rd where it apparently is supposed to connect with Davis Creek Rd (shortly before you get to the point you are looking at).

fwiw, both MapQuest and the Cherokee County GIS both show the road going all the way through.

Well, we're driving through there on Saturday, even if I have to sharpen the leading edge of my front splitter and blaze a trail.

Paul,

Found the following:

http://www.mountaintravelguide.com/4x4%20Trails/North%20Carolina/cherokee/Upper%20Tellico%20Off-Road%20Vehicle%20Area.htm

http://www.offroaders.com/reviewbox/showproduct.php?product=266

Especially from the description provided on the second link, it sounds like at the end of Davis Creek Road it becomes unpaved and normally would turn into part of the Upper Tellico Off-Road Vehicle system. As the news items indicate, the National Forest Service has apparently closed those roads to use/traffic. Like last week. Maybe the Google is smarter than we think. Today's Pearls Before Swine did hint that we should start praising the Google.
