This is just a feeler. I'm thinking about putting together a long weekend run using something similar to the route below:

Day One (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=N+Front+St&daddr=N+Carolina+268+W+to:N+Carolina+16+N+to:N+Carolina+16+N%2FN+Carolin a+88+W+to:N+Carolina+16+N+to:Troutdale+Hwy%2FUS-58+W%2FVA-16+N+to:S+Commerce+St+to:B+F+Buchanan+Hwy%2FVA-16+N+to:W+Virginia+16+N+to:Co+Rd+9%2FCranebrake+Rd%2FRitt-Berwind+Rd+to:W+Virginia+80+N+to:Mud+River+Rd%2FUpper+Mud+River+Rd+to:38 .417754,-82.260132&hl=en&geocode=FXoUKQId4Dwu-w%3BFXoQKAIdoOAp-w%3BFaQIKQIdb38n-w%3BFbimKwIdjlsl-w%3BFXOlLAIdt-El-w%3BFXpaLgIdLtgm-w%3BFTr7MQId4Dwk-w%3BFTIENgIdmJQj-w%3BFSrdNwIdFk4j-w%3BFSSIOAIdKgQi-w%3BFbzkPgId6Bsf-w%3BFRhVRQIdru4c-w%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=11&mrsp=12&sz=14&sll=38.410962,-82.280474&sspn=0.035914,0.057249&ie=UTF8&ll=36.221565,-81.090088&spn=0.295805,0.457993&z=11)

Day Two http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Co+Rd+60%2F89%2FE+Mall+Rd&daddr=OH-775+N+to:Hog+Back+Rd%2FTownship+Rd+268+to:KY-3+S+to:KY-3+N+to:KY-3+S+to:State+Hwy+1714+to:S+Levisa+Rd%2FUS-460+W+to:KY-80+E+to:Main+St+to:State+Route+605+to:VA-80+E+to:Honaker+Rd%2FVA-80+E+to:VA-80+E+to:Co+Rd+50%2FGlenbrook+Ave%2FVA-80+E+to:Jeb+Stuart+Hwy%2FUS-58+E+to:Denton+Valley+Rd+to:Denton+Valley+Rd%2FDenton+Valley+No+1+Rd+to: N+Shady+St+to:TN-67+E+to:N+Carolina+18+N+to:36.239843,-80.851135&geocode=FcA0SgId1MwY-w%3BFdQoTAIdgsYW-w%3BFahQSwIdAmMT-w%3BFTpxSAIdxvUR-w%3BFQJjQwId7KQU-w%3BFYZ7QgIdtGkU-w%3BFbjSQAIdYE0W-w%3BFcJgOgIdSuMY-w%3BFQVuOQIdUzkX-w%3BFRy0NwIdGFIY-w%3BFeYSNwIdeWsZ-w%3BFQjUNQIdepcb-w%3BFUD4MwIdpM8d-w%3BFWrvMgIdNnId-w%3BFZS7MAId-Pce-w%3BFfAjMAIdGO0d-w%3BFYGWLgIdVwge-w%3BFSWiLQIdEd4c-w%3BFbyrLAIduLkf-w%3BFXLEKgIdbuIg-w%3BFdp0LAIdNJ0p-w%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=17&mrsp=21&sz=11&via=5,6,10&sll=36.280814,-80.847015&sspn=0.295581,0.457993&ie=UTF8&ll=38.117272,-81.677856&spn=3.094222,4.224243&z=8

Probably run Day One on a Friday and Day Two on a Saturday. The folks who can't get home from the Elkin area can use Sunday as a travel day. Alternatively, I might cut day two a little short and we'd run the last 2-3 hours on Sunday morning. These are long runs and while we'd build in some pit stops, etc., not so much sightseeing or shopping. It is all about pounding out some twisties.

Looking at our schedule from the past year and knowing what kinds of events are out there, I'm thinking about an August timeframe (tentatively looking at weekend of August 6, 7, 8). UPDATE (2/9): My schedule is in and I think I'm going to try to do this the weekend of August 13, 14, 15 (Fri. - Sun.). Scoping out hotels now and trying to figure out whether we'll have 10 to go so I can try to get a group rate.

If you think you'd be interested in something like this, please post here and let me know. No commitments at this time. Just trying to gauge interest.

Thanks!

I don't think my MINI's been to WV yet. Does that route cross the Appalachian Trail?

Ben,

On the way out, looks like it crosses the AT just south of Marion (point G). On the way back, I think the leg of 421 through Cherokee National Forest crosses (somewhere around point O).

Well, I did find a loop route that includes the Snake that could probably be done as a long day run. Around 4 hours-ish iirc. Of course, you have to get up there and back. Been thinking about that as an event as well.

It's a couple hours from W-S to it, but some good road along the way!! Been toying with the idea of an SS run to it or even the The Snake being the first SS overnight run!!!

Been offline for a few days - Jeff - that route looks FANTASTIC. Like a BToT route. Schweet. August s a good time, too.

And yeah... I'm interested in a Snake run too.

I'd be up for a run in August since i'm not going to the Dragon in May.Fwiw, i'm heading back to the Mitty at Road Atlanta (same weekend as Dragon) missed it last 3 years by going to the Dragon. So, when you finalize the dates i'll mark the calender.
Thanks for putting a run together.

We'd be interested, but I think meeting up along the way would work better for us from SE VA. Any ideas of a rendezvous point along the way that would work?

Dale,

Go to my Google Notebook page (http://www.google.com/notebook/public/03448587378752875236/BDRuASgoQsYXRzYQk). It is the first set of routes on the page. I'm actually looking at having to do an over night stop on Saturday night and then finish up on Sunday morning. Very similar to a BRP type schedule. Hopefully would not put you too far away to make it home on Sunday (or maybe worst case you could leave straight from the Sat night stop, but you'd miss the Snake part). I've been working on loading it into MapSource (for eventual loading into my Nuvi), but that is slow going as I'm looking for things like meal stops, gas, etc.

Still trying to decide which weekend to do this on (first or second weekend in August). I have found a hotel in Elkin for those that might drive in Thursday night. If I think we'll have 10 rooms (which it probably looks like), I think I can get us some group block rates as well.
