Alas, another short notice event.... (poo)
I have to be at work at 2pm in High Point this coming Saturday which means I have to leave from Pinnacle at 1.
66 is a good run, I run it on my way (through Quaker Gap, etc) to Germanton to the Post Office. One thing I suggest though is to run 66 from Rural Hall (where it connects at Old 52 at the Rural Hall bowling alley) and run it all the way up to 268. Also heard that the road to the Stokes Co Landfill has a bunch of curves in it, I cant think of the name of the road right off.... The road runs you right through Quaker Gap.
Also, side track over to Taylor Road. The road is on the right just past that little township- on the other side of the "Oh my GOD you have to be kidding me curves!" (which I know that really narrows it down alot) Taylor Rd loops around back onto 66, and also Rock House Rd has got a few curves in it as well. Rock House Rd connects off of Taylor Rd and takes you up to 268 just west (by about 2-3 miles) of where 66 connects with 268. Taylor Rd has a complete 180 turn on it. (great big <but tight> U-turn), also with some beautiful views.
Also, if you go up 66 past 268 up close to Nancy Reynolds School, there are some more of those "Oh my GOD you have got to be kidding me!" turns. Trust me, riding in a great big firetruck through those turns definately increases the pucker factor!!!!!!!! Just watch your shoulder because some of them have a HUGE drop... if there is even a shoulder!
*I live not far from where 268 connects with 66 across the street from Double Creek FD on 268*
Let me know (at least 2 weeks ahead of time) when the next event is happening. Would love to join you guys on a road trip/get together!

I'd do the 17th with you. I kind of know that neck of the woods. I think 66 North of 268 is great, and then 89 over to the river, and back on Dan George to Quaker gap. Good stuff.

I'm thinking about this too - I'll see if I can make it. I especially recall that route since when I was in school at UNCG we used to go to Hanging Rock SP & I would have a blast in my '83 Honda Civic (I used to think of the little hatchback Civic (it only weighed like 1700# & I had a performance cam & Weber carb on it) like it was sort of a rough modern rendition of the old original Mini before BMW brought out the new MINIs). Plus I'm finally ditching the runflats since one of them got destroyed by a nail and getting some good (BFG G-Force Sport) tires & it would be good to put them through the paces a little bit.

It turns out that at some point during the run, I blew my right engine mount. Oil gooshing out all over, very ugly. Flow will replace. I hear 05's tend to do that.
HotRodPilot
March 19th, 2007, 08:52 PM
You have the TSW engine damper, don't you? It seems like that would keep the vibration and stress off of the stock damper. Let us know if FLOW has any theories on why it happened:(
Bullfrog
March 19th, 2007, 09:59 PM
Yep, I have the TSW damper. Since it's a mod, Steve said if I took it off they'd pretend it was never there. From what I read on NAM, it's fairly common. I think they must have had a bad run of them mid 2005, but I don't know for sure.
HPUdrew
March 19th, 2007, 10:31 PM
I did some research on that too and it seems it's a pretty common problem on all 02-06 MINIs. Mine actually seemed to be doing some extra moving after the run too... I might be in the same boat as you Rob.
Drew
simplygriff
March 20th, 2007, 09:28 AM
Yeah, it is common. Speaking of which, I need to go double check mine and my damper just to make sure everything's good. I picked up a little rattle in the front part of the dash actually on that run. http://www.simplygriff.com/Images/Emoticons/shrug03.gif

Hey Griff, I picked up a dash rattle, somewhere on the passenger side, too. I had read on NAM about this happening, at idle with the engine damper, but had not experienced it till now. Actually, it started after the track day. Maybe spirited driving loosens something that is then vibrated by the damper?
Anyway, it's nothing the new Invidia exhaust and louder volume on the radio won't fix. ;-)
Rob, Drew, sorry to hear about your situations!
HotRodPilot
March 21st, 2007, 03:50 AM
and the steering wheel sitting off center...
Drew
I've had the same problem since about 20,000 miles (43,000 now). They did an alignment and charged me for it, and it still didn't fix it ( I don't think the tech drove it after, as the steering hadn't changed after it)
I got my money back for it, and at the next service I had them look at it again. The tech just mounted the steering wheel more to the right (it was about 10* to the left) so now it's about 2-3* to the right. There are mounting notches in the back of the wheel that keep from infinite adjustments. The wheel doesn't pull at all one direction or the other, so it seems like it's just the way the wheel is mounted or something. I doubt that the dealership will be able to get to the bottom of it, since both times they didn't seem to have a clue on my car.
If they make headway on yours please pass it along:cool:
