Update- I won't be able to lead this drive - but feel free to do it without me!!!! Anyone who wants to step up and lead, go for it!

Hi Gang,

Looks like I may have a meeting at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday AM. I'm considering taking the LONNNNNNG uber-twisty route from there to Fontana in the afternoon. After all, it's not the destination... it's the journey.

Here's what I'm considering:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=5555+Concord+Pkwy+S,+Concord,+NC+28027-4600+%28Lowe%27s+Motor+Speedway%29&daddr=%4035.421975,-82.144961+to:35.17546,-82.80256+to:35.268,-82.98233+to:35.23469,-83.23905+to:35.16252,-83.53974+to:35.3156,-83.86162+to:35.44354,-83.91502+to:fontana+village,+nc&geocode=FSZvGwIdfcww-yHf38JilfHQNSkr0tByHxtUiDF11atG5G3FIg%3BFRd_HAIdP5Ea-w%3BFSS8GAIdgIgQ-yk9nyt89aVZiDEqF7Xvo_GJeQ%3BFaAlGgIdRsoN-yl5xWCwWwlZiDHFzQNBYiIEUA%3BFYKjGQIddt8J-ymVOyW2zxdZiDFdbqDUzujIIA%3BFZiJGAId5EgF-ylFkjR-RixZiDEhA2WXgPMu5g%3BFZDfGgIdjF8A-ykhBD6p5cNeiDEucjxx0Ecr0w%3BFVTTHAId9I7_-inrUK5wxr9eiDFHQEVziOHcfA%3BFSS0HAIdYQUB-yl3CVKZ7rheiDEwF70Tbu2j_w&hl=en&mra=pd&mrcr=0,1&mrsp=2&sz=11&via=2,3,4,5,6,7&sll=35.192889,-82.799835&sspn=0.226138,0.476532&ie=UTF8&ll=35.396047,-82.252579&spn=0.113905,0.238266&z=12

Parts of this route are new to me, parts are on my perennial Dragon-area drives.
Should be all paved and all good. I anticipate it's a 5-6 hour drive with a couple of brief stops. I plan leave from the CMS area sometime late morning on 10/22 - will firm up the time as we get closer. I can arrange to rendezvous with anyone who wants to join me along the way.

In typical Blimey style, our rate of forward momentum will only be limited by the number of Impalas we get stuck behind along the way. Otherwise this will be Super Spirited. I don't recommend it if you don't like the idea of stuff sliding around in the back of your car.

Who's with me?

Any ETA on when you'd be hitting Coullowhee or Franklin?

I'm planning on hitting Fontana Village Th's Eve and have a route mapped for Friday that this could work into

I'm not planning and don't think I can make it to MSSD, but if there is anything that might shake me free to make it, this run would be it.

Your reroute might give me an easy point to join the fun. It looks like that about 3 hours into the run at turn 17 segment B (turn right onto Hwy 215) would be a good spot to join.

Who in their right mind would drive 2.5 hours out of the way to drive an additional 3.5 hours? Wait!!! I have the answer, a Mini owner. Also, only a person that’s a lug nut short would want to do this and follow Blimey, anywhere.

I’m in.

Yep. The turn onto NC215 is a good spot. I know that turn by heart. :-)

Might not be able to keep up but the route is good to have. I always wondered what routes you enjoyed up in those mountains.

4ish is good enough for now. That should work with the route I worked out

Let's talk when we get closer and swap cell #'s

Looking forward to it too!

Sorry, my friends - change of plans, I won't be attending MSSD this year. Nothing bad, just traveling a lot lately and need to trade some "MINI time" for "family time".

Feel free to do this run without me if you want - should be AWESOME. I'll miss it this time.

Can anyone lead a run in Paul's absence?

RudyT
October 16th, 2010, 11:47 AM
Pending peak interest in this run, if people are willing to lay down rubber, I'd be willing to lead the way if they are so brave to endure me and my co-pilots navigation skills.

if Fri I can join ya enroute

If Sat count me in!

I'm talking about both to Fontana on Friday and a Saturday morn run for those not going on mine

RudyT
October 16th, 2010, 06:11 PM
Friday... As far as Saturday, more to come... there's a slight smell of tarmac in the air so keep posted :-" (unless if someone else does)

We can all agree its not a true MSSD unless there is a spirited run aside from Twisters more tame adventure, for all those petrol heads looking for that "fix", that drug one can only get from the more twisty journey.

Keep posted here. Should have something by end of day tomorrow. I'll create a new topic/post since the route is slightly changing from Blimey's due to the Friday Mexican dinner at Bryson City. Details are VERY close to finalized. I hope i have enough interest. The plan so far is hopefully take a small crowd from RTP area, head to Charlotte, gain a few more, and go the uber twisty route to Bryson City in time for the 7pm dinner. Think of it as a warm up to the main event.
