View Full Version : RudyT's FRIDAY Furious Twisty Tarmac Adventures to MSSD 2010

***URGENT UPDATE***
Times and Scheduling has been pushed back slightly to earlier times. Recommend showing early and waiting as the caravan makes it way from RTP to Charlotte.
This is to gain more time on the back end to give us more options as to what roads to take and even a chance to make it to Fontana for check-in. When approaching Franklin, we will have to play it by ear time wise. As the great BlimeyOne said, you never know how long a run takes until its driven.

What better way to get to MSSD then by carving out a path through Pisgah Forrest through some relatively scary switchbacks. The goal is to make it to Bryson City (or Fontana Village) with time to spare for Twister's MSSD Welcome Dinner set for 7pm. An alternate route is planned if time becomes constrained. This is slightly modified from BlimeyOne's original route due to the Welcome Dinner in BC.

*All times are subject to change!!! This isn't an exact science. Times are tentative since traffic, impalas, and people can cause delays. I WILL have my cell & radio (20sub20) on me at all times. PAY ATTENTION to the departure times as these are paramount in making this a success. Those daring souls in the Triad area; please meet @ the Panera Bread on exit 49 off of I85 in Concord Mills ; front entrance parking lot. I can arrange to rendezvous with anyone who wants to join me along the way.

WHEN: Friday (22 Oct)
SCHEDULE is as follows:

DEPARTING Goldsboro, NC @ 0630 am ---> arriving @ 0800ish
DEPARTING RTP Area @ 0810 am (latest) @ Starbucks at Streets of Southpoint
ARRIVE: 1000 (approx) @ Charlotte NC, Exit 49 off of I85; Panera Bread (Concord Mills)... If parking is full, park near Panera; we will find you. LUNCH TBD by Group
DEPARTUTRE: Concord Panera Bread @ 1030 (latest)

Please Read... This schedule reflect my times... It is recommended to be there EARLY and wait a few minutes for the incoming caravan rather the other way around. If we run early, then that enables us to leave earlier! For those with smartphones, I'll keep variations posted in real time via live forum updates using three GPS's and Tapatalk.

We "might" be able to incorporate a Wayah Rd run or go all the way to Fontana Village, but it would require a much earlier departure time across the entire schedule. I am game on with what others would like to do, but keep in mind this extends the route. (which would be AWESOME).

Anticipating a 5.30 hour tour with our final resting stop at the MSSD Welcome Dinner in Bryson City. As the great BlimeyOne said, its not the destination but the journey! Being that this is led by RudyT, our ability to move forward is only limited by impala's. If listening to your tires chirp isn't considered great musical notes, then this might not be a great choice for your playlist on your ipod.

I'm in as long as you think my Justa Clubman can keep up :-)

I'll be meeting at the Concord Panera

We are in and will be at Panera by 12:20. We would be up for an earlier start time (and longer twisty run) if the group leans that way. Looking forward to it either way! Will work on getting a radio for the trip.

I'll keep any changes posted here and in bold red type. I really want to squeeze in Wayah Rd and complete Blimey's original route with a check-in to Fontana before dinner. We would have to arrive to Fontana by 5:00ish to make it to the welcome dinner in bryson city. I would assume a 10 am departure from Charlotte and a 730 am depart from RTP. IF i get good feedback here, then I'll change the times and route.

I do have a few extra radio's I can lend out if you can't find any radio's for the trip. There cobra's and they work ok. I find the Motorola's work pretty good for the cost.

We are in either way, check-in before dinner would be nice. I pulled out my radios, purchased for a Disney trip in '99. Nice Motorola's, but only 14 channels. I'll hit up my neighbors, or go buy new. Would probably forget to return yours. Thanks.

Can't wait to go. The Starbucks at Streets of Southpoint is the one on Fayetteville road across from the mall, correct?

Splendid.....see you chaps at Starbucks. I am all about "earlier the better" so if a swing vote is needed at anytime during the day ....that is my leaning. I have the theme from "A bridge too far" and "The great escape" loaded on ,my ipod.

I'd like to thank Rudy and copilot (and BlimeyCabrio for planning) for a great run out to Fontana(ish) (it was so fun and took so long we had to break off and head for dinner in Bryson City). There are some great roads north of 64 and the Cashier/Highlands area. We definitely need to plan a Spring MOTD run in that area. We also found that Wayah road is being paved. Except, currently 1/3 of it is scorred/chopped road and gravel.:fie: By MOTD it should be sweet.:ms_thumbsup:

I thank each and everyone of you for making this an awesome Dragon experience. Just got home safe and my three main goals were accomplished making this a success...

1: Everyone had smiles on thier face and survived me and my co-pilots navigation skills.
2: We all came back with our MINI's and the drivers intact, just dirtier, thanks to wayah road.
3: We all came back with our wallets intact, aka, no blue light special

I will post some pics soon pending how they turn out. For now I am beat but a good tired as this will be one for the books. Good times and good memories. I enjoyed meeting each one of you and look forward to led again, that is unless BlimeyOne comes back from his cryogenic state... The force of BlimeyOne will rise once again... (very mucho thanks to the force of BlimeyOne for showing me the true way of the force).
