Turkey Strut ('cause turkeys strut, not trot) Rally
Was talking with my son about doing the Turkey Trot Rally this year and I haven't been able to motor much lately. He told me turkeys strut, they don't trot, so I should change the name. And I said, "OK".
Like last year, it will be the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Before everyone loads up on Thanksgiving meals and heads off for family time, take a little bit of time for some motoring in the cool fall air.
Turkey Strut Rally
Saturday, November 20, 2009
Start Time ~ 9:30 a.m. (tentative)
End Time ~ 4:00 p.m. (tentative)
I looked back through my library of routes and think I'll try the route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=US-21&daddr=35.9048864,-80.8742074+to:35.9490828,-80.8966317+to:35.9616105,-80.8695139+to:Mount+Vernon+Church+Rd%2FNC-1880+to:35.96183,-80.90168+to:35.9961361,-80.8961349+to:36.0126501,-80.9310794+to:36.0037876,-80.9328388+to:36.0236084,-80.9666585+to:Brushy+Mountain+Rd%2FNC-1001+to:36.0088275,-81.0759625+to:35.9607825,-81.1601113+to:35.9426548,-81.1840304+to:35.9999963,-81.191098+to:36.001199,-81.2265405+to:NC-16%2FNC-18+to:NC-16%2FNC+Hwy+16+N+to:35.9669248,-81.1638131+to:35.9906823,-81.1454646+to:35.9514596,-81.1047141+to:35.9739935,-81.0751807+to:35.967863,-80.9928098+to:35.9118995,-80.8950682+to:Jennings+Rd%2FNC-1892&geocode=FbsKIwIdnTgu-w%3BFXbdIwIdIfUt-ymtw4_-FV5RiDEJcDKPih7M0g%3BFRqKJAIdiZ0t-ylVcMGvzWBRiDGi8QDuGeFIdQ%3BFQq7JAIddwcu-ympWYtJHGFRiDFwVAnP21cU-Q%3BFRLMJAIdMPct-w%3BFea7JAId0Ikt-ykz33_GKmFRiDFy2MEwL5qH1w%3BFehBJQIdep8t-ynXIayjTWFRiDGlNAP5N1kTXg%3BFWqCJQId-RYt-yl3RwVAJmRRiDG5ydp34agiTw%3BFctfJQIdGhAt-ylnT4kcg2ZRiDEtMhyFQR3Z9w%3BFTitJQId_oss-ymb-Eu86WVRiDHER-7oNdsD9w%3BFWpzJgIdRYEq-w%3BFXtzJQIdBuEq-ym3eqXc_WtRiDGF9tbun_EFEQ%3BFc63JAIdUZgp-ylFfmRVympRiDF0q-yLM21Ulg%3BFf5wJAId4jop-ykT_IKPWRVRiDEQueuhOc032g%3BFfxQJQIdRh8p-ynjloit7hRRiDGw0mZ3WzjEtA%3BFa9VJQId1JQo-ynBmhAlRxRRiDF0GQx4TexjpA%3BFdfMJgIdCVcp-w%3BFW9KJQIdVUEp-w%3BFczPJAId24kp-yntoj47MxVRiDGFA-DdEZxxGQ%3BFZosJQIdiNEp-ymB__21PGtRiDHk_pgURUcHSw%3BFWOTJAIdtnAq-yntlchzaWpRiDGKMZdp_j-LTQ%3BFWnrJAIdFOQq-ymJGpAjgGlRiDGIoNjA_L3Oxw%3BFXfTJAId1yUs-ynXzQ-xgGhRiDFRmbNR1zHnag%3BFdv4IwIdpKMt-ykz3EhbA15RiDHkwAG2tVh3LA%3BFbYLIwIdEDUu-w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=1&mrsp=9&sz=14&via=1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15,18,19,20,21,22,23&sll=36.021683,-80.978336&sspn=0.043179,0.070896&ie=UTF8&ll=35.934653,-80.950012&spn=0.553743,0.990143&z=10) laid out by Midnight Dave for (what I called) the Pace Yourself! rally. I don't recall whether that actually occurred. In any case, looks like a good route. I'll post up the actual rallying point and lunch plans (and nail down times) in the next few days. Wanted to get this out there in case anyone wants to put it on their calendar.
Looking forward to seeing folks before we head into the cold of winter.
UPDATE #1 (Nov. 10): OK, rally point will be the Fast Track store on the other side of the Interstate from where we hit the twisties. Looks like a decent-sized Shell station. Google Maps link (http://goo.gl/maps/ge8d) to the actual point.
I think we'll try to do lunch at the Brushy Mountain Smokehouse and Creamery (http://www.brushymtnsmokehouse.com/) in N. Wilkesboro. It is not too far off the route and being a BBQ joint, I'm guessing they have hushpuppies!
I've loaded the route into MapSource, so with a little more testing on the Nuvi, should be able to post the gpx route. First leg from start to lunch looks to be 2.5 hours long. Leg after lunch looks to be 2 hours long. So if we are wheels up at 9:30 and keep lunch to about an hour, we should be done between 3 and 4 pm.
Update #2 (Nov. 13): Here is the Turkey Strut Rally gpx file (http://www.totehmoon.com/uploads/thmmc_turkey_strut_rally.gpx) for those with Garmin units that can handle a pre-defined route (or you can otherwise use a gpx file). When loaded, there will be two routes to be imported - one for the leg up to lunch and one for the leg after lunch. Remember - you have to do a File...Save As... or Save Link As... or however your browser names it on the link so you can save the file. Otherwise, you'll just get a page of text in your browser.

Yes the Pace Yourself rally did transpire .. in June 09 I believe, in conjunction with the Charlotte Cars&Coffee. We had about 9-10 MINis. Roads were great & the stop to cool the engines were timed & spaced out perfectly. It was very casual schedule .. we'd stop chatting at the stops & hit the road when we were ready .. very laid back.
Only thing to tweak would be a lunch plan. I think we ended up at Subway which wasnt so group centric .. and then we
headed home.
Should be able to put it on the calendar, yeah!
I even make a motion we throw an invite out to the Pace-Yourself Mash-Up original organizer .. even MINI-less my bet is MN Dave would be a welcome addition .. and able to keep up, even if he's driving a John Deere :girl_wink:
And as always, Thanks for your planning/organizing/leading efforts!

Wish I could go, the Pace Yourself route is good. Not as aggressive as a Bullfrog run, but very scenic and entertaining, with a few fast bits. Lots of stops offer opportunities for conversations mid-run, which was cool. Example: Dave, did you see that huge vulture that attacked your car and tried to fly in one of the open windows? And then we regroup and start anew. That also allows you to change up the order a few times.

Becky,
I haven't decided yet on the meetup point. I'm looking at the Google street view around the Interstate exit at the beginning of the route trying to figure out where a parking lot is that will be big enough for our group to gather in (and preferably have some facilities available for folks to hit before we leave). I'll try to post in the next few days.

If the RDU / Chapel leave Southpoint Mall between 6:45 and 7:00 we should make it to Exit 143 around 7:30 to 7:45 (using conventional Google map speed; we all know for Mini owners, thats a joke!). If you PM me your cell phone number I can give you a call when we reach Exit 152.

Jeff,
I think Jak was hoping the Triangle group could hook up with me at Exit 147 where we have met in the past (at the old BBQ & Ribs Co. - they are turning it into a Zaxby's now). Jason could either meet me there or we can do a flying merge (which would be easier from the ramp at Exit 140). My gps says the rally point is about 1:20 from Exit 145. I'm hoping to get there by 9:00 a.m. so a 7:30-ish connection should work.

Adele,
I'm not sure how the new badges attach...I assume similar to other grille badge holders. Here is a set of instructions (http://www.totehmoon.com/uploads/grille_removal_instructions_v1.pdf) on how to remove the grille to install the badge and then get it back on. About a 10 minute job once you figure it out.

Todd,
My recommendation is for those looking for a less spirited run to get close to the front. The tail of the line has to play catch up and tends to get more spirited. Of course, the tradition in THMMC seems to be those less spirited get toward the rear.

I know the trip when we left Winston and drove around to the Vineyards was maddening. We had 3 slowwww cars in front of us and a church bus....CHURCH BUS pulled out in front of us. This time I am taking "therapy CDs" in case it happens again. It's not a big deal....just annoying......looking forward to Saturday.

Me too - Do you have any idea approximately what time will you be passing Greensboro (between the Wendover Avenue to Airport exits). I'm up for a Triad meet-up to join the caravan....

Triad Peeps are meeting at 8:30 in the Hanes Mall parking lot from what I gathered from going back through the thread. However I think I'll be picking up some breakfast at Mickey D's first lol

Stuart,
If the caravan coming from the Triangle is on the road at Exit 147 by 7:30, should be passing by the Wendover exit approximately 8:00 a.m. (maybe a couple minutes earlier).

Hanes Mall has a rather large parking lot, so in the interest of avoiding confusion, I'll restate that we are meeting between Dillard's and Golden Corral at 8:30. I can't wait!

HI, supposed to be perfect weather tomorrow for all us Turkey Strutters...might start off a little nippy, but heard its supposed to get into 60's..for us ex-midwesterners thats crazy great news..someone told me the minute I stepped into NC I was a NorthCarolin-ain...sort of ran it all together he did....just having late supper, green beans, mashed potatoes and post roast............yummy...
Prolly over prepared for tomorrow...but that's me.......
Was glad to get some news about Drew...I have never met him or his family but might mosey up 2 WakeMed this weekend, give support and a MINI goodie bag to sustain her and family while they are there...all donations accepted and appreciated. Used to work there and it gets to be a long day/night sitting in waiting room, waiting for your turn to sit w/your loved ones.
With that note lets all drive safely and cautiously tomorrow. See you then.

Awesome day today! I thoroughly enjoyed myself (and I may have managed to talk someone into ditching their ratty old 91 Honda and getting a snazzy Mini.
My friend Chance said it was nice meeting you guys and he enjoyed the run! Luckily I didnt scare the bejeezus out of him with my driving, so he may join us again some time in the future :-p
Hope everyone has a wonderful Turkey Day and I'll catch y'all on the flip side :-D
Had to find a car wash somewhere to wash all the brake dust off of my car on the way home.... Man! It was covered in it lol
