View Full Version : Up, Up, and Away Run 2-12-11

Hey All!

I know this is super short notice and kind of far away for most folks, but I am putting together a little run for this Saturday. I am stressed out from college stuff and need a break, and I think a good MINI run will solve the issue. :ms_thumbsup:

I am planning on doing one of these runs and would love input!

This is a circle route out of Boone:

This is the Snake!

Wish I would have seen this earlier! Would have joined you, but have some plans this weekend with my wife and daughter.

I came up with the idea at the last minute. I did not think I was gonna be in town, but now that I am, I am going on a run. Haha.

These are both great runs through the Boone/blowing rock area. We should try to plan ahead and work on a date for early spring. Great restaurants and good shopping for those wanting a change from the usual starts in the winston area.

Who would be interested in the late April time frame? Doesn't look like there is much happening the month of April.

I would be happy to start putting something together. Just want to see who would be interested.

A Saturday in late April would be awesome! My exams begin on the 27th (Wednesday), but I only have one that day and the 2nd (Monday). I have a LOOOONG break in between.

Also, any Saturday for that matter is perfect for me. Haha.

Also, I think we (Silver_Phoenix) and I are gonna try and combine the routes I posted. We are going to circle around and when we hit Hwy 421, we are gonna run north! Should be awesome weather, too. Hopefully we can get some good pictures.

We went out today and checked out the run. The routes I listed below were great! There was a bit of traffic, so we had to divert away from the route. We ended up running up to Mountain City, TN. Then, we ran down to Watauga Lake and Roan Mountain State Park. We gained some serious elevation and then hit the snow and ice. The roads were clear, but there was so much snow on the sides of the road it had no where to go. We crossed the Appalachian Trail several times and saw cars on Roan Mountain from people hiking the trail. It was amazing. This Roan Mountain Run would be amazing in the spring. We then ran down to Hwy 80. This is my favorite road in NC. On the way out, we got stuck on the parkway and had to do some off roading to find civilization. I will post a map of our exact route later tonight!

Hey guys! Here is the track I recorded from yesterday's run. I didnt start it until we were in Boone (we came from Stony Point NC) but it recorded everything from Boone all the way back to my place last night lol

Click the link ---> http://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?snapid=134177 and you should be able to view it in all of its glory ;-)

Program used:
Droid X Version 2.2.1 : "My Tracks"

Your way of doing it was so much easier than mine. I really need to start using My Tracks. Google Maps just freaked out when I attempted to lay out the whole route. I believe the actual mileage for the run itself, from Boone to I40, was about 180 miles. Fun stuff. I am also just now back in Charleston. Yes, it is 12:25.

The distance shown on that track was 313.20 miles

Other neat info:

Elevation Gain: 12,626ft
Max Elevation: 5,488ft
Min Elevation: 700ft
Max Grade 34.9%

With that last software update (for My Tracks) it now has the option to upload to Google Fusion Table (which Ive never heard of before) and I think I like it a LOT better than what it was doing before with the upload...

I say we spring for a re-do of this route in a few months when it gets warmer (so that its not feeling like negative 10 on top of Roan Mountain) - and maybe add a few more routes in there too to make for a really long day.

I love how our adventures are so adventurous! Off roading, lots of twisties and spur of the moment route changes to boot. Plus add in the fact that we always run into snow and our elevations keep getting higher and higher :-p
