View Full Version : 4/9/2011 - 4th Annual Bullfrog Run

March 2nd, 2011, 01:12 PM
OK folks, it is that time of year again - time to go Bullfroggin'. Each year as we enter the spring season, one of our first drives is the Bullfrog Run done in memory of one of the club's late great members, Rob Baker aka Bullfrog. I'm dedicating this annual run to our late great member Rob Baker. Rob (better know as Bullfrog) was one of the finest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Rob loved Highway 66 and I only think it's fitting to hold a yearly event in his honor. Some of the longer term members of the club knew him well and can speak to his excellent character and enthusiasm for MINIs. You can get a little taste in this thread (http://www.tarheelminis.org/showthread.php?607-We-ve-got-a-friend-%28Rob-Bullfrog%29-in-need...).
The Bullfrog Run includes a run up Highway 66 - full of some excellent twisties to shake off the winter cobwebs. The complete route is posted below along with our lunch plans.
Motor on!!!
We'll meet at Lowe's Hardware in Winston-Salem off University Parkway off Highway 52 north on the right just off the exit at 11AM.
Lunch plans are going to be...
Bring your own picnic lunch to eat at Hanging Rock State Park.
We'll try to find a shelter or somewhere we can all be to enjoy a bit of downtime before running 66 home to Winston and beyond.
My plan is to pick up a sub from Subway in the morning in the Lowe's parking lot.

Jeff,
Didn't the lunch plans last year consist of a picnic stop at Hanging Rock? That was some good social time, especially all the sharing of leftovers from those that packed too much lunch. I would recommend the picnic setting assuming the weather cooperates.

MOTD is a huge get together of MINI owners on the Dragon in western NC. I think the number of attending cars this year is up to 395 MINIs. This is the 9th running of the event. They also do a spring and fall event. Tarheel is one of the sponsoring clubs for the fall event, so more club members go to that event. I am doing the spring Dragon because I will be out West during the fall event.

Please see organizations like NASA, BMWCCA, Tarheel sports car club, Phil Wicks driving academy to name a few for HPDE events at tracks like Virginia International Raceway or CMP and the track I'll be running on next weekend Road Atlanta. There are other tracks and these organizations offer training from beginner to advanced. Bthayer has a thread here listing a schedule for many events this year! Hope to see you at an event soon, it's the most fun you'll ever have with your cloths on! Lol
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me! If I can't answer your question I can point you to who will know.

Lardilla,
I am off the weekend of the 2011 Minis on the Dragon!! :)
I looked on the events forum to see if there was a thread for it but I didnt see one. I have alot of questions regarding timing, hotels, etc. I would like to know someone prior to going out there so I dont feel like a "stanger" amongst a large group. I''m not sure if the wife can swing it or not yet, but probably not.
My biggest concern is how to stuff enough beer in my MINI to last 5 days without affecting handling since its a "dry" county:ponder:
If anyone lives near Clemmons and wants to PM me their number I would love to chat with someone who has been there done that......My wife and I are in our late 30's, very outgoing and can get along with anyone. We are conservative (love fox news), have a few horses, and enjoy a good beer and live band. I like to drive fast (Like Ricky Bobby from Talledega Nights:yes4:), and just because I work for Winston PD don't hold it against me....LOL
Having a badge has its perks when you get pulled over by the fuzz....:nono: Minis on the Dragon sounds like a great few days and I hope to go this year. I also have a HERO HD hemlet cam from my mountain biking days and I maye see about getting a dash mount for it cause it takes awesome video.

I can tell you that we moved here from the Philly area six years ago and love NC. The people, landscape, schools, roads, and traffic are so much nicer than up north. The climate is amazing with almost eight months of spring like temps. Even in the winter u may wake to 32 degrees, but by noon its almost always above 50. We were able to sell our overpriced house up there and get a little farm here with half the yearly property taxes!
We truly have met some of the most sincere friends living down south and hardly see have any of the snotty, "clickish" behavior the north is known for. My wife and i were the first of our families to move away from the suburbs of Philly but when are families come to visit they realize what a sweet way of life we now have..

Mike,
There is usually a caravan of Minis going to this event on the morning of the run that stars at the Starbucks on Fayetteville Rd. across from Southpoint Mall (6813 Fayetteville Road, Durham, NC) at ~8:30 AM. We usually have 4 to 5 cars. This departure time gets us to the Lowes parking lot in WS at ~10 AM. That leaves plenty of time to get a sub from Subway for lunch and talk with the other Mini addicts (or Miniacs as they are known).

Michael. Send me your number and I'll try and give you a call Friday night if your in town and still looking for someone to grab a bite with. My wife and I are in our late 30's and usually go out with a "crew" on the weeknds that varies in age from 25-40.
This MINI club is out first experience with "motoring" as well. I have been a driving oriented person my whole life, having owned motorcycles from age 16 to 34. I've had crotch rockets and my last ride was Harley Softail. I ended up selling the Harley when we relocated to pay for the expenses. Plus, the fact that we now live on a dirt road leading to our horse farm. (Have you tried keeping a Harley clean on a dusty road with all the nooks and crannies!?!?!?)
We are really excited about the MOTD, since it will be a weekend getaway for my Wife and I (Do not Disturb sign on the hotel door...LOL:kiss:) and we will be around some great people and fun.
We hope the weather stays sunny and warm!!
TTYL and see you at the BullFrog.

It is intermittent right now and only seems to do it on hard cornering or when I drive it hard (hense the problem with the run). So I'm staring at a 1k repair for something I already sank a bunch of money into. I guess I have to chalk this one up to a life lesson.

As usual I will be leading (or is it following, I can't remember :sarcastic:) a group of Minis going to this event on Saturday that starts at the Starbucks on Fayetteville Rd. across from Southpoint Mall (6813 Fayetteville Road, Durham, NC) at ~8:30 AM. We usually have 4 to 5 cars. This departure time gets us to the Lowes parking lot in WS at ~10 AM. That leaves plenty of time to get a sub from Subway for lunch and talk with the other Mini addicts (or Miniacs as they are known). Please post a reply to this message if you plan on caravanning to the run. Thanks.

Accuweather (http://www.accuweather.com/us/nc/winston-salem/27101/forecast-weekends.asp) still says warm with variable cloudiness. Weatherbug (http://weather.weatherbug.com/NC/Winston%20Salem-weather/local-forecast/7-day-forecast.html?zcode=z6286) is similar. Weather.com seems to be the outlier. Question is whether they are just ahead of the curve and the others will be downgrading or is weather.com just more pessimistic.

I will be bringing club logo patches ($4), stickers ($4), pins ($4), and magnets ($8) to the run Saturday for those new (and not so new) members that want to purchase them. Sorry, I will not have any of the enamel grill badges for sale as I am still working on getting those made. Please bring your checkbooks or exact change because while "TurboMini" (my Clubman S) has almost every option, I left out the Mini logoed change machine. :haha: I will also be bringing some spotting cards to tag other Minis you find.

Gah...Looks like I wont be able to make it after all :( Too much going on with trying to buy a house before the government shuts down! It's a 2hr drive just to get there, so if we're up for it, we might head up there early tomorrow morning....we shall see. If I don't make it, have fun for me too!! :)

Looks like mostly cloudy .. which is the ONLY way I have any chance in a non-S with keeping up with the rest of you .. if it's HOT and I have to run the AC, I'm sunk ..
Some of us will be hitting the road not long after 8am to catch up .. so please post as soon as possible .. and for what it's worth, I know there's a whole contingent that'll drive in the rain -- even at the track! -- so perhaps we inpromptu make the drive anyway and just get to do it again on the "make up" date? At least there's no ice!
OK, going to finish getting ready .. I'm pretty sure I hear thunder .. so hoping that mother nature will get it outta her system before the morning! See ya!

Bear in mind that after the Bullfrog I had about 20 people over the house for a BBQ, and it seems that one of the cops from my squad hijacked my computer and posted that. I had the Tar Heel page pulled up to show some guys the club and network of friends.....go figure.
