Nice Plates....., Gives me Great Ideas, (for my new NC Plate). The new NC red lettering, seems odd, but goes well with the Red cars, It almost does not look like an NC plate, but all is good,
The "Twister-<guessing> the speed and it's ability power to come and go, never knowing when and where, with such power ".

Well mine is pretty simple...
Just went with the name that I call my MINI... its an homage to The Jetsons (one of my favorite cartoons), George Jetson worked for Spacely Space Sprockets.
A sprocket is a gear or wheel with metal teeth that meshes with a chain or track... theres probably a few on a MINI ;)
Can be read another way SPR+OCKET=super rocket.
Either way... it just fits

Pleasant surprise today - my new vanity plate arrived. Only two weeks turnaround time, so I suppose a nod is due the DMV. Or should that be DOC? First time I've ever had a vanity plate for one of my cars. Guess a Mini will do that to ya!

Mine still has the TN tag MOSKITO on it, but soon it'll be a NC tag.
The reason for me to get a vanity plate in TN was to get a different color. My tag now is all black and white versus the regular ones which have green and orange in it. (Well, originally my tag was all blue and white) So now the questions is, is it still worth it?

Personally I think it's kind of cool that just above it is says First in Flight ... like the first flying mosquito .. :-)
And the extra $$ for a personalized plate go to the NC Highway beautification program so it's for a good cause ...
Last but not least -- with the "random" plates someone from this club WILL tag you with a club card that you might "avoid" having happen with a personalized plate ... yea, I'm as likely to do so as anyone ... but if I see a MINI with a tag I recognize from the forum then of course I won't .. :-) :-)

Until I got the tag, I didn't know that for specialty and personalized tags, NC has gone to digitally printed tags, rather than stamped or embossed ones. The letters are perfectly smooth; can't feel them at all! They the process cuts production costs, and lets them use lighter aluminum. It does seem to be somewhat sturdier than a pie plate...

I've got a story to tell you sometime about one I had on my AUDI one year that will make it apparent why I always look at them from several different angles ...
I had read about the new "flat" plates and have actually considered ordering a replacement just so I have one of each variety (I keep them even tho I usually change them up every couple of years -- you have to wait until after the registration expires otherwise DMV wants you to turn them back in)
Looks good -- I'll remember that one so you won't get THMMC tagged in some random parking lot some day -- or at least not by me! :haha:

When did they switch to the flat plate? My new personalized tag came in July or August and it's a stamped tag.

Mine came on Sep. 25, three - four weeks from order date. I am not overly fond of the cheaper aluminum (thinner) plate stock. I wonder if it could be bent in an older style car wash, if you don't have a plate cover. Most of the plate covers are made of plastic, can it be long before the plates are made of plastic with this new digital printing?

They started delivering the new plates back at the beginning of September. Thus far it is mainly personalized plates and they are phasing in production of specialty plates using the new digital printing process. Thus far, no indication regarding a switch to the new style for all license plates. I suspect it is only a matter of time though.
For those keeping track of such things, NC is also changing the way they handle vehicle inspections and registrations. They are going to a new system where you have to have your vehicle inspected before the registration can be renewed. As part of this new system, the inspection stickers will no longer be used. I'm not sure how LEO will know whether your inspection is current with the new system (other than the fact that your registration is current). You might want to note this bit of info:
it must be inspected no later than the last day of the month your vehicle registration expires or your registration will be blocked.More info is available at the NC DMV site No More Sticker (http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/emissioninspection/nomoresticker/) page.

Hmmmm.... my inspection is due in October.... so if I wait and take my car in on Nov 1, I wonder what will happen? In the past, they would have put a new October sticker in... would they still do this because technically I don't qualify for the *new* program? Or does the part that says "no stickers will be issues after Nov 1" really mean that? Hmmmm. I think I'll try it and find out... Would love to lose the sticker vs. waiting another year and a half...
X5JR
October 4th, 2008, 07:09 PM
And, now counties like Watauga (Boone), will have to have full air quality inspections; no more $8 inspections.
jcauseyfd
October 4th, 2008, 11:02 PM
According to the FAQ, this new method will not change a county's designation as safety only vs. safety+emissions. But the price for the safety inspections is going up from $9.10 to $13.60.

Mine was due in Sept and I took it on the 29th and asked them NOT to put the sticker in the window since in 2 days it wouldn't be needed and was told that DMV had moved the date out ...
The registrations and inspections will now be date-synced .. if in the past registration was due in July and inspection in September, both will now be due in the same month. So I guess the LEO will know based on the month sticker on the plate .. personally I thought when they went from the ONE BIG MONTH on the sticker to the multi-year stickers not only did the LEO enforcement go down since it's not so obvious but *I* kept forgetting. That ONE BIG digit was a constant reminder .. for the past 2 years I get the "past due" notice from DMV before I remember ..
Not unlikely as a result of getting older, too ... :yes4:

I'm about 95% certain someone tried to get that on an S2000 and got turned down .. you sure there wasn't a DMV bribe involved???? :-)
LOL, no, no bribe....lol.
I have sent in several plates that were rejected. Each time I would call up Kay (yeah, I'm on a first name basis with her now...lol) in Raleigh.
I called her up this time with the above plate when it got rejected. She asked me my name and I told her...
She responded with "ohhhhh, I remember you, you have LKEITWET on an H2 Hummer"
Anyway, she told me that it is the DMV's position to initally reject any plate that may even be close to offensive.
She also went on to say that if I wrote a letter to state my position, they would consider it by a board.
Sooooo, this is the letter I wrote her...
So now you know the rest of the story...
Dear Kay Hatcher,
As per our discussion last week, we had discussed the reason why my plate “KSSMY-S” was rejected.
Though the DMV has to initially reject anything that may be uncertain, the reason stated for my plate’s denial was because it may be considered in “poor taste”.
I am asking that this plate be reconsidered for several reasons.
1) My car is a Mini Cooper “S”. I love the car and the term “Kiss my S” was in referall to my Mini Cooper “S”. The fact that the you, the DMV or anyone may be offended would only be in the fact that they are purposely reading more into it than necc. (get your mind out of the gutter…lol)
2) I have had several plates (as shown below) that could be construed as offensive and yet they were passed.
Some examples are:
Fordgasm
LKEITWET (from racing jetskis and the trailer plate LUVITWET)
If neither of these plates are not considered in poor taste, then surely the plate I am requesting doesn’t even come close.
3) The reason that the plate was rejected was because it “may” be considered in “poor taste”. What exactly is poor taste and who determines it?
Wearing white after labor day is in poor taste, is it illegal? I think not. Is it offensive? Only to those with a fashion sense.
Telling a racial joke in public may not be illegal but most likely could be labelled as poor taste. Is there a government agency to determine if these are considered “poor taste”? None that I know of.
4) Last but not least, the constitution of the United States defines the first amendment, “Freedom of Speech” as:
The right to speak without censorship or restraint by the government. Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment (http://www.tarheelminis.org/topic/first-amendment-to-the-united-states-constitution) to the Constitution (http://www.tarheelminis.org/topic/united-states-constitution).
Where does the “United States of the Offended” draw the line at what is offensive or in poor taste? If I had a Harley Davidson Fatboy motorcycle and ordered the plate “FATBOY”, would I have to worry about offending every overweight man because it may be offensive?
The plate I’m requesting wasn’t even deemed offensive, it was rejected because it “may” be in poor taste. Well, unless the government is now dictating what may or may not be considered poor taste, I guess no one will be allowed to wear white after labor day.
Please give me my plate. My mini Cooper is the best car I have ever owned and I find it offensive that I can’t express my joy over my car.
