View Full Version : 6/4/11 - Back of the Dragon Day

May 13th, 2011, 04:42 PM
Hey folks,

Not sure how many of you may be aware of this, but up in Virginia they are taking their cue from the tourism success that is the Dragon and they have "created" the Back of the Dragon (http://backofthedragon.com). It is Hwy 16 up in Virginia and they are hoping to capitalize on its twistiness with the motorcycle and car club folks.

On June 4th they are planning to hold Back of the Dragon Day (http://backofthedragon.com/?page_id=186) as a sort of grand opening. The schedule for the day is on their web site. You may note that it looks like it is geared toward motorcycles, but over on the HRMINI site they indicated the organizers and local supporters are welcome to MINIs as well (apparently word of the impact of MOTD has traveled up there).

Just wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone may be interested in going up there for the "opening" day and help represent us MINI folks. I'm undecided myself whether I'll go. If some folks are interested, just post up here and I'll add it to the calendar as well.

Maybe we can cordinate this into 1 event for us assuming some of us are willing to go...

ready and willing!

I want to go!!

If we want to make it to the opening ceremony (which is at the northern end in Tazewell), we'd need to leave Elkin by about 7:30 am to take a route up through Sparta and then run up the BOTD.

At this point planning to spend Friday night in Elkin / Dobson and heading to the event Saturday AM since I'll be coming from Raleigh .. but receptive to alternate ideas as long as they don't involve a 5am alarm Saturday morning ..

Bully Likes Virginia !!! We're Game !!!

So... How many curves are there? Since the Tail has 318 curves in 11 miles... Anyone know?

Looks like it would be fun

So those who posted, are you planning to go next weekend for the Grand Opening? Or are you posted you'd be interested in the drive at some future point as a THMMC drive?

I'm still planning on the event on June 4th, hopefully won't have the only MINI! Trying to decide about staying Friday night in Mt Airy area or Wytheville ... the difference being the Saturday AM alarm clock ..

But if any MINIs are going and spending Friday night, let me know as that might be a deciding factor. (Undecided about heading home Saturday late (after the 3-4pm drive) or spending Saturday night and heading back to NC on Sunday since I could make an excuse to be in GSBO on Sunday ... )

Beth and I may try to get there Saturday.

I continue to be a day-to-day call on whether I'll make it. I have mapped out a route that goes from Elkin up to Tazewell via the BOTD and comes back home via The Snake. For me, it would be about 10 hours just of driving, and I'd probably need to throw a lunch meal, some time in Tazewell, and a gas stop or two in there. Not sure I'm up to such a long day even if things work out to free up my schedule.

Could you email me that route?

Jeff (and anyone else),

Here is the gpx file (http://www.totehmoon.com/uploads/back_of_the_dragon_day.gpx) I put together (remember to save the link).

There is one route from Graham to Elkin (to a Cracker Barrel restaurant - seemed like as good a place as any for folks to gather). One route from Elkin to Tazewell (the north end of BOTD) via Sparta before picking up 16 and the run from Marion to Tazewell on the BOTD. One route from Tazewell back south on BOTD about halfway, then it cuts cross country to make its way around to The Snake, then some more back roads to Wilkesboro. And a route from Wilkesboro back to Graham. There are also routes just for BOTD - one northbound and one southbound. The ends of each of those are as close to where I could tell BOTD Day events were going to be.

Hope it works. The odds that I may free myself up to make it are dimming quickly. :-(

If I can make it, I'll be taking this route

Could a food stop in Sparta be on the agenda?

June 3rd, 2011, 11:00 PM
Several of us are in Wytheville this evening and will be leaving from the La Quinta at 815am if anyone heads this way and wants to stage here.
It is about 50 - 60 minutes from here to Tazewell
(since we left after work we took the direct route here, but Jeff's route via Sparta for a return option is definitely on the table)
Some others will meet up with us here in am for breakfast at 730 and we'll caravan together. Since this will be a mixed venue of MCs & MCs (motorcycles & MINIs) it seems like it would make a best showing if the MINIs are together
(and I'm not familiar enough w Tazewell to know if there is a local logical staging place .. anyone w ideas please let me know!)

I'm sure my contact # is on the forum but since I likely won't be checking back before the event, give me a call as appropriate 9I9 6O6 65I5

Have a great weekend with whatever your plans may be!!

I arrived in Wytheville, VA. See you at breakfast.

June 5th, 2011, 07:37 AM
Here are few pictures I took yesterday. The road was very nice and the company was as always excellent. This road is above above Marion and we actually had lunch at the same restaurant there that we went to in the "Big Walker" tour in years back. If we do that tour again we should add this leg up to Tazewell on VA 16 and Back. Also hen we arrived I heard some in the crowd of motorcycle owners and the event officials state, "There are the Minis!" and shortly thereafter they had us park along the road as participants and not in the tourist parking area, nice.

June 5th, 2011, 07:55 AM
That's awesome Jeff.

Did you happen to notice how the road was as far as having areas for people to pull off?

June 5th, 2011, 08:06 AM
I'd say 7 to 8 but not paved like the Dragon. There are 2 or 3 roads intersecting.

June 25th, 2011, 10:07 PM
I noticed on the main page, under upcoming events it has BOTD Day listed as 8/20/11. Is this still on? I haven't seen anything else on the forum about it so I thought I'd ask :-)

June 25th, 2011, 10:30 PM
They are planning to hold another BOTD Day on August 20th, this time with the events being held in Marion at the southern end of the route. I went ahead and put it on the calendar but have not started a thread yet.
