Search for Sasquatch Rally

There's things out there in the middle of them woods
That make a strong man die from fright.
Things that crawl and things that fly
And things that creep around on the ground.

But I couldn't believe it.
I just had to find out for myself.
And I couldn't conceive it
'Cause I never would have listened to nobody else.
And I couldn't believe it.
I just had to find out for myself

Legend of Wooley Swamp, Charlie Daniels Band

In March 2011, Thomas Byers claims to have spotted (http://hubpages.com/hub/Big-Foot-Or-Knobby-Is-Alive-And-Well-In-North-Carolina) a “Bigfoot” on Golden Valley Church Road. He also claims to have captured video of Bigfoot crossing the road. This occurred near South Mountains State Park which is one of the most undeveloped state parks in the North Carolina system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFLyO2RWGms&feature=youtu.be

In June 2010, Tim Peeler claims that he was approached by a “Sasquatch-type beast” and had to fend it off with a stick. This occurred in Cleveland County, NC, near the community of Casar.

The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (http://www.bfro.net) claims 67 sightings in North Carolina, including 2 in Burke County and 6 in Cleveland County. Many of these reports involve the creature locally known as Knobby.

http://www.totehmoon.com/uploads/bigfoot_crossing_300.pngOK THMMCers, now is your chance to catch your own footage or photograph (should you be so lucky) – it is the Search for Sasquatch Rally!!! Departing from Morganton, we will follow some backroads around Lake James, coming perilously close to the locations of some Bigfoot sightings in the Pisgah National Forest, before getting on Hwy 226 for a run up to Little Switzerland on the eastern leg of The Rattlesnake. From there we will head on north up through Spruce Pine on the way to Red Hill, before turning around and coming back down Double Island Road and then picking up Hwy 80 (the western leg of the Rattlesnake).

If you aren't scared off yet from all those twisties, we'll stop for some lunch in Marion at Countryside BBQ (http://countrysidebbq.net/). Then we head down into the country to loop around from the south side and go up into South Mountains Park (http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/somo/main.php) for a hike to see the waterfall. On the way there, we will go down the very road Byers' spotting occurred on and we will pass near Peeler's location.

The route is normally projected to be six hours long. But we will try to run it in a spirited manner (oh, if only I were good enough to do a Blimey Tour of Terror speed). Add in some time to stop for lunch and pics, and it will be a full day. But, finishing by late afternoon should give most people time to get back home by the end of the day on Saturday.

Here is the rally info:

I plan to drive down to the area Friday afternoon/evening – Morganton looks to be a little far for the Triangle area to make it that morning. If I make it down there early enough, I may do a run of The Rattlesnake (included in the gpx file) which will give a little preview of Saturday's run.

If you think you have the nerve to take on this monstrous rally, please post below and plan to attend!

P.S. - High definition, stable cameras are highly discouraged when hunting Sasquatch. But bring 'em if you must!

I've have yet to do the dragon, bbbuuuttttt how is the rattle snake in comparison?

jcauseyfd
July 6th, 2011, 09:38 PM
jmo, but nothing can really compare to the Dragon in a couple respects. First, the Dragon is pretty much technically challenging the entire length. Second, the Dragon is isolated and is in the middle of an undeveloped area, so there is much less to worry about as far as distractions and impediments.

That said, it is always possible to find roads that have stretches that are just as technical as the Dragon and it is possible to find roads that have stretches that are isolated. Maybe not in one single stretch like the Dragon. The flip side is other roads introduce some other features like long sweepers or major elevation changes that the Dragon doesn't have. And other roads may be a lot longer than 11 miles.

So a route like the Rattlesnake is going to be different. For some people it will be a better experience, for others not as good.

iirc, the portion of Hwy 80 just south of the BRP is very twisty/technical. Hwy 226A was twisty as well, but quite a bit of development on it. I haven't been on the rest of the route, but someone here on the site has done the Double Island portion and indicated it is a good road.

Reba,

Not sure what else you may need to know that isn't included in the initial post. Be at the initial gathering spot on time as we'll have a short driver's meeting before starting.

Before getting there, be sure to fill-up with gas and hit a bathroom. Maybe grab a drink to have with you in case you get thirsty. If you are so inclined, you may want to bring a camera (preferably one that takes grainy, poorly focused photos as that seems to be the preference of Bigfoot).

One thing not mentioned (especially if you think you will join more events) is to bring an FRS/GMRS radio. These are typically sold in sporting goods or electronics big box stores as a blister pack of two. You will want to make sure you have one that can get channel 20/20 (i.e. it has privacy or security channels). If you are not sure, folks usually have an extra that they will let you borrow.

If this is your first ride with THMMC, you may want to bring...

A clean pair of shorts! "only if you plan on using the Sport Button"
something to get the "perma-grin" off your face.

I'm sure there may be some more things you will need. Anyone?

A couple quick notes as the day gets near:

1. Looks like I will not be headed down there on Friday afternoon. Or evening. Instead, I'll make the drive down there Saturday morning (early rise - boo).

2. Because the response has been a little more than I expected (a pleasant surprise!) and I'm not going to stay at the Hampton, I'm a little worried about crashing their parking lot. The advanced, Bigfoot tracking satellites have provided some imagery indicating there may be a vacant lot next door with an abandoned parking lot. If we can get to that, I think that will make a better gathering spot. So please be on the lookout when you get to the area and have your radios on and call out if you need to.

Weather report looks to be hot with a chance of wet Yeti sightings. Please be sure to check all your fluids, including radiator fluid, before departing. Check those tire pressures as well.

Yet another note/reminder!

Hey folks, just thought I'd point out something that might have got lost if you didn't read the announcement real closely.

When we get to the summit of South Mountains State Park, I plan to do the hike out to the High Shoals Waterfall. I anticipate this hike will be somewhere between 2.0 and 2.7 miles long. So this probably will be about an hour long stop.

If you are planning to do the hike, please don't forget your hiking/running/walking shoes (especially if you have different driving shoes), bug spray(?), and a towel or something for yo' sweat.

If you are not planning to do the hike, you might want to bring a chair and whatever else you may need to keep yourself entertained while hanging in the parking lot (though spending time looking at and discussing MINIs works).

Thanks!

Very well done, Jeff. It should be an annual event, many will like it.

Yep very well done Jeff and what a turn out!! Was great seeing old friends and meeting some new ones. Really liked the route and the lunch place, then the hike up the falls at the end just capped off a sweet Rally!!!

Hope everyone made it home OK, lost a couple on the way home when I turned and they didn't...

+1 on the annual run!

Jeff, amazing job putting this together so quick and the turnout was awesome.

You couldn't have picked a better route...OK, maybe the DIRT road was a bit of a bummer.

Great day!

Great Job Jeff! What an awesome drive (minus the rocks and the dirt)! Hope we can do it again next year!

It was an absolute blast - my face actually hurts from grinning so much!

Thanks again Jeff for putting all of this together for us - definitely needs to be an annual run! And thanks to everyone for a great drive, new friends, lots of laughs and lots of knowledge - it was great to see all the fabulous things folks have done to their cars.

And special thanks to Pam & Ron - I'm getting a rear swaybar, my first real mod - woohoo!

Officially home after a wonderfully Mini-tastic day! Just wanted to thank the organizers and fellow miniacs for making my first rally one that I will never forget!

Thanks to everyone who showed up and enjoyed a day of MINI motoring. Sorry if we lost anyone after lunch. Who knew I managed to pick the only roads without a large church parking lot or abandoned business somewhere along they way that would help us regroup.

Review of photos and videos for evidence of Bigfoot will take place over the next few days.

Great driving today and first intro to this club! Thanks for taking care of the newbies, you thought of everything; we even had a personal greeting from the sheriff!
I plan to sneak back and do some remedial practice on the twisties since I was the navigator today.
I have a new respect for the sports button and the value of the right (or wrong) tires!
Good plan and well executed.

Thanks for the event... I think it all went well. Maybe we can catch that Sasquatch next year. I only messed up once and crossed the yellow diving into the corner too hard.... still feel bad about it.... but lesson learned and shows that these new run flats need changed out. ;)

Here's a Video of the run...sorry, I looked through all of my video and NO signs of Sasquatch anywhere.

Let's hope someone else finds one.

I did see some yellow line crossing in this video...we all do it and know we shouldn't. you'll know who you are when you see it!!

Enjoy!!

No sasquatch here, either - but still examining the photographic evidence. Here are the best of my shots from yesterday...

What a wonderful time! We had a blast at our first event. Everyone we met was wonderful and friendly and had smiles on their faces. The driving was incredible - even at the back as a less experienced driver. I laughed out loud or squee-ed a lot. :D One of my favorite moments was doing the twisties and having Offspring's Come out and Play pop up on the playlist. I think I got some extra zoom into the corners with that one.

Thank you Jeff for the great event. Oh, and thanks for the maps! Extra bonus helpful. :)
