Since retiring to mtn city tn. 2 yrs ago,I've used rt.421 north to shady valley & from there you can continue on 421 to bristol or west on 91 to elizabethon or east to damascus va. where you can use rt 58 east for more nice driving. There are more of course & madmaps.com is a great site to find them. Needless to say,the "bikers" (like me) use them also.

There are some GREAT roads up in that area, for sure. I used to do a lot of work for Eastman Chemical and made the drive across from Boone to Kingsport many times with varying routes.... unfortunately before the MINI....
I have a buddy that lives up there and I'm still looking for a "work" excuse to have to drive over to visit him...:)

Hi,
All you have to do is get to Shady Valley and just ride around there and back to the store and then out again and back and out and back....
2 wheels are lotsa fun up there as well. Haven't been yet this year - too hot! But, fall is coming and it is on the ride schedule for at least one weekend.:D

I'm going to be driving from Greenville SC to Boone on Wednesday late afternoon - Thursday AM - plan to take this route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=34.832968,-82.296524&daddr=US-25+N+%4035.069390,+-82.436290+to:US+25+Hwy%2FUS-25+N+%4035.223130,+-82.437530+to:I-26+W%2FUS-74+W+%4035.338500,+-82.437880+to:Chimney+Rock+Rd%2FUS-64+%4035.450270,+-82.287810+to:NC-80+%4035.787580,+-82.203100+to:NC-80+%4036.012860,+-82.186840+to:TN-143+%4036.119590,+-82.081180+to:boone,+nc&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=11&mra=dme&sll=34.861708,-82.282791&sspn=0.241705,0.563736&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=35.986896,-81.686096&spn=1.211181,2.447205&z=9). Which, briefly, puts me in East Tennessee. :)
The drive up NC 80, etc. from the Old Fort area to Roan Mountain is supposed to be fantastic...
