I have a lovely 1973 Leyland Mini 1000. By lovely I mean it has lots of rust, bad paint and hasn't been run in years. Fortunately I know that running one of these is a labor of love and you have to have a lot of love. I have been putting off fixing Alfie (that would of course be the car in question) for a good long while. I basically got him for free when I traded a worthless truck for the little guy. I just did a full tune up while taking a break from all the much needed patch welding. I finally got the little engine to start, but it idles a little and then revs rather high and then comes back down to idle for a moment and repeats the high rev cycle. I have tried adjusting the timing. and it either runs like this or stalls instead of idling. I have my throttle cable about as far out as possible, the choke closed at this point and fresh gas in it that only finally got to the engine to start it. At least it actually starts without any ether spray, but I still can't even think about driving it like this. Does anybody have any ideas?

Gas filter? How's the petrol tank? Is it at all rusty on the inside?
I used to have a 74 super beetle and indeed I went threw a few gas filters cause of rust in the tank and the car would do things like idle high and then low,or just Die at lights or stop signs.
I don't own a classic yet but I'm trying!

Looks like I'll be doing a carb rebuild. I covered up the intake to limit the amount of air and it stopped revving up and down. It then just ran as though the throttle was wide open so something must be wrong with the throttle plate.

It's the original SU HS2. Simple enough.

Yea, not too much at all, more things could go wrong with a Stromberg.

Well, finally got around to taking off the carb. Turns out it is a lot worse off then I originally thought. I'll need a whole new one as so many things are wrong with it. I am honestly surprised that the little car even ever started. If any one happens to have and HS2 or HS4 laying around that they know works please let me know as I would be rather interested in taking it off of your hands for a reasonable price.

Would you have a chance to bring it by the shop sometime. I don't have any carbs here buy I am familiar with it and may be able to match something up at a friends place. The SU is a very simple carb and usually a fresh diaphragm a good cleaning and new oil will fix it.

I got rid of my SU's and went with a downdrafft weber 32/36 - also usually when the Classics surge the way you described, you have a severe vacuum leak somewhere
Sorry I didnt respond before but i'm just seeing this
