There is a roadcourse trying to be developed off of HWY 85 in Spencer, NC. on an old textile mill site. See racehighrock.com for more info. There are some folks trying to oppose it for some very lame reasons that are not true to my understanding. If you would support a track there please go to petitiononline.com/hrir and sign showing your support. There will be a hearing for a permit at 7:00 August 2 in Spencer. The SCCA has ask that all that can, please show up and demonstrate your support in person. The major person trying to block construction is being represented pro bono by a lawyer from Virginia.....

I signed it and I'm passing it on to numerous people to continue signing it.
I wonder how much those condo's will cost and if you're allowed to live there year round or not. :-P

I heard from somewhere that part of the opposition lies in the fact that part of the proposed layout is going to be on an old Civil War battlefield, the last (?) battle either of the war or of the war in NC ... That would not, to my way of thinking, be a "lame" reason to oppose it ... historic areas are having to fight developers tooth & nail these days ... can any one enlighten me here?

#1687 This would be way cool. I've always cast an envious eye up at Virginia & wondered why NC couldn't have something like that also.

Crapola! I'm kind of with Becky on this one, hadn't heard this part--maybe he can find someplace else nearby?
They change the rules for developers ALL THE TIME, (I have two different buddies who are developers in GA), so that's a lame line of reasoning.
I really doubt VIR would fight this, if anything, it might bring more people into the world of road course events and let's face it, they're pretty set already.
I would like to see it happen, and hopefully in a socially consciencable, (yes, I make up my own words and phrases, get over it, I'm trying to make a point here), way.

I guess my question for the people that oppose this with the reason of a civil war battle taken place there maybe????? What were they doing to preserve it, before this was offered up??? It's easy to find a reason to oppose almost anything, but be willing to go the distance for your reason..

The letter I received from the SCCA said that this was NOT the site of the battle mentioned by the opposing parties and that the battle did in fact take place close to this site at a railway station of some sorts. From my understanding the developers have offered to build something there to honor the battle. I am only passing on the info that I received. Personally I think this is great use of a track of land that has been for sale and unused for a very very long time. Even if the battle did take place there (which they say it did not) I still think that there should be someway to honor the past and the future at the same time...

From everything I've read so far, it is my understanding that this land is privately owned and not state property. So I question the "historical value". Neither the state, county or city have done anything to preserve this land. I have seen nothing on any map claiming it to be "historical". If its the land area I'm thinking of, according to the state topography maps the land belongs to Alcoa.
I just think some lady doesn't want a racetrack in her back yard! No one seemed to care about artifacts when the factory was built.
