This year's Blue Ridge Parkway Tour will include a first-ever volunteer project to help beautify the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are helping the Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway (FOBRP). We will be doing this project on Sunday morning (the 17th of June) shortly after we depart Roanoke at 9-10AM. The project is to remove the tubs and stakes at the N&W Overlook (milepost 106.9 or 106.8). Seedlings were planted at this overlook a few years ago. The seedling have tubes and they are staked. The tubes and stakes need to be removed and items removed taken to a dumpster off of the parkway. If you wish to help THMMC with this project please bring a pair of for gloves with you on the BRPT. We will have permission slips for the volunteer project that we will hand out to be filled out before dinner on Saturday night in Roanoke. Please join us in this project.

Sounds good. Other than gloves, will we need any cutting tools?

No, just gloves. All other tools will be provided by the FOBRP.

I would like to thank all those that participated in the BRP beautification project that we did for the Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway. For those that could not make it, early Sunday morning (June 17th), we arrived at the N&W Railroad Overlook (MP 106.8), where 34 of us volunteered to help remove the wildlife guards and support stakes from tree seedlings planted along the overview some years before. We cautiously made our way through the shoulder-high blackberries and brambles to find the tree tubes hidden in the overgrowth that grew over the past year. Pulling the guard tubes revealed red and white oaks, maples, and tulip poplar seedlings (as well as a few hornets’ nests!) but we all worked together to pass the tubes and supports up the relay line of MINI drivers to stack them at the top of the overlook for removal. Many hands made light work; we finished in less than an hour, and grabbed a bottle of water and a group picture. I have scanned a letter I just received from FOBRP thanking us for our volunteer efforts and the donation the club made (with all of your help). Thanks again.
