View Full Version : 2nd Sunday June event
Mr. Magoo
February 12th, 2006, 01:24 PM
I know we have been looking for things to do on the Second Sunday. Well, I have one for June. I plan on going to VIR that day for the Gold Cup Historic Car series. I have been twice and it is one of the big events at VIR.
They will have all kinds of older sports cars racing (usually 5-10 laps) in differenct classes. The paddack area is open and the drivers love to talk to spectators. Usually several classic minis racing.
For those who want to drive on the track, without racing, they have a drive during "quiet hour". This is from 11-noon. On that you can drive the track at decent speeds. The cost is a small donation to a charity.
I will have more detail as we get closer, but just wanted to advise so people can make plans. Plans would be to leave Greensboro about 9:00 AM and return by about 4:OO
See post #7 for departure details. Those going are:
Red Ryder (2)
Minianni (2)
Twister (2 poss)
Moorefield (2)
Salemgym (2)
GoldFinch2 (2+)
CooperSKart (2 1/2)
Wheelie (1).
Mhairman (2)

Just a reminder regarding the 2nd Sunday in June, drive to VIR.
http://www.vir-goldcup.com/
This year they are featuring the Cars of Germany. They plan is to leave Greensboro (location to be determined) promptly at 9:00 and leave VIR around 4:00. For those who have been to VIR, I plan to gather at turn 4. That will put us right at the track and give a good view of the racing. Of course you can go to any other place on the track or into the paddock area to the cars "up close and personal". You can bring food or eat there. They have fast food at a reasonable price.
Additionally, during the 11-12 hour you can usually drive the track for a $25 charitable donation. (Drive the track and let Uncle Sam pay for it).
More info as we get closer to the date.
(BTW, that is not Father's Day)

We will leave from the BIG LOTS parking lot (US29 and Cone Blvd) at 9:00, Sunday morning, June 11th. To get to the parking lot, coming north on US29, take the first Cone Blvd. exit to the right. Go east about a 1/4 mile. There is a big parking lot on the left. Be there before 9:00.
Steve, you said Saturday you would be coming from King and would meet us on 29 around Reidsville. Let me know where.
I just found out that MC2 magazine is going to be there. Perhaps they will feature us in a group photo.

Just to clarify cause I don't think the actual date is in this thread, this is on Sunday June 11, 2006 correct?
I'm still not sure if I'll make it cause I'm planning on going to pir8 97's maintenance day in Greenville the day before... That's a lot of mini stuff for one weekend. :D

I'll probably go with you from Greensboro. It really isn't that much different time wise and I'd rather go with a bunch of minis :D.
Yes Griff, that is Sunday June 11th.

Just saw this posted on NAM, by MINI Cindy of MC2 magazine. Looks like something interesting on Saturday vs. Sunday. Any thoughts?

Come See MINI vs Mini Part I at the Gold Cup!
Yo!
It's and epic battle, new vs. old (hell new vs. new and old vs. old as well). And no big fish stories because the referee will be TraqMate Data Aqusition Systems!
When : Saturday after the final regularly scheduled session
Where : VIR, Gold Cup Weekend
Why : Cause it ought to be a hoot!
Three variously prepared new MINIs vs three variously prepared classic Minis. Find out who is fastest overall as well as through the turns, who pulls the best G-loads, who has the most agressive braking zone, and who really does flat foot it where no one has berfore. Come root for your favorite make, model, year and driver trackside then stop by at the finish, see the downloads and check out how they really compare!

Do they do the charitable drive of the track on both days?

After talking with several people, including one that will be racing that weekend, it appears Sunday is the best. That is when the final races will be held and it will not conflict with the drive to VJG camp on Saturday. I have heard from several that plan on going.
Please let me know the number, so I can contact VIR about a group discount. I'll also post those on the first post.

I hope to go up (from Raleigh) on Saturday and see the new vs. old contest that Cindy describes, which sound like a hoot. Besides, I'm already otherwise committed for Sunday. Never been to VIR and plan to start spectating at turn 4/5 but will move around. Look for the 05 BRG cabrio with "ZERO SPF" license plate and white bonnet stripes. I'll be wearing my THMMC t-shirt.
Best,
Alan

I have attached details for the Sunday races, including a list of cars currently registered. I have also sent an email asking for a discount for admission at the gate. Regular admission is $20 at the gate, but I am hoping that they will give us the advanced price of $15, or better.
We are leaving from Carolina Circle Mall at 9:00. That is at US 29 and Cone Blvd. We will meet at the McDonalds or close by.

Damn those people are hard to deal with, but at least we are not paying "retail". The best they would give us, after the advanced ticket sales ended, was 10% off. While that is not great at least we got something. Therefore admission will be $18/. Still the best price for a day worth of racing. (We could go to NASCAR and pay $90-$150+) We will all arrive together and go to the "will call" desk.
See everyone on Sunday.

As a reminder for those who may not have been to VIR before, there are several things that you may want to bring.
Food and drink are allowed (although they frown upon glass containers) although food and drink is available as a very reasonable price
A yard chair (we will have a couple of canopies)
Hat and suntan lotion
FRS radio, if you want to contact your spouse as they wander off
FM radio, if you want to listen to the announcers
Camera

Shea and I will meet you at Big Lots. We are bringing chairs and canopy, etc. I doubt we will get any track time because FLOW did not bring a group up there. You can ask, but it's doubtful at this point. Fingers crossed!

(I belong to a kayak club, and after every paddle someone writes a trip report. Well, here is my version of that idea for the Tar Heel MINI Motoring Club.)
We met in Greensboro Sunday morning, and while waiting Twister Girl got to live her fantasy. At 15, with her new learner's permit, she want to drive a MINI. Not being able to drive "stick", has limited her options. She has driven Magoo at the Dragon, but today was her big opportunity. Apparently, an orange convertible, is her main dream.
While waiting she had the opportunity to make several laps around a vacant parking lot (top down), and fulfill some of that dream. Next step is convincing Twister that she "needs" a MINI.
At 9:00 +/- we left with 7 MINI's on our hour drive to VIR. Upon arrival at VIR, we bought our tickets and staked out our place at turn 4. Immediately, we decided that we should avail ourselves of the opportunity to donate $20 to the local fire department. (Actually, that was for a ticket to drive on the track. Heck, we would have given to the Save the Snail club, for the same opportunity). Six MINI's, lined up at the start. Twister Girl continued her ride in orange MINI; this time as a co-pilot. She apparently was trying to catch bugs, because she rode with her hands in the air (ala roller coaster).
After twenty minutes we returned to the MINI "tent" area, and immediately gathered, with testosterone overflowing, sharing how fast each went and where. While wives, that did not ride just watched and shook their heads in disbelief, we settled down to an afternoon of the "professionals" racing. Occasional trips to the paddock area, to view the true race car was an opportunity to see what made their's go faster, on the track, than ours.
With our tents and 9-10 MINI's (we picked up some when we arrived), we had many people coming by to look and talk. MINI-Cindy (see page 20, volume3 of MC2 magazine), joined us as did THMM club member Butch MacKenzie. Butch won his race in his MGB. He started from the front and never had his lead taken away. Congratulations, Butch.
At about 4:00 the tents were packed and everyone went in different directions for home, culminating a great day, of sun, fun, fellowship, and racing.
To those that did not attend, you missed a great time and perhaps next time. To those that did, thanks to everyone. I think everyone had a great time... I know I did... and Twister Girl.

I too, want thank Steve for putting this event together. I had a blast. Twister Girl also took some great pics while co-piloting. I will try to get them up on the gallery soon.
Minianni was sad that she didn't get to go. She also doesn't quite understand how when I'm alone in the mini I travel the speed limit but when she's with me it's kind of spirited. I don't think I'll be driver much in the near future :( :o
Oh and I got caught in the storm in Stokesdale on the way home. Luckily the hail was small and short lasting no damage done.
I also want welcome Mark aka the hairman to our club and to Matt, Carla, and Ethan. I hope I remembered your names correctly, I'm lousy with names. I know I got Ethan's right.

Giving those Porsches & CanAm cars a run - although for some reason I don't seem to recall that part... hmmm  (they don't call MINIs 'giant killers' for nothing)! We had a great time & it was good to meet everyone! I think Ethan enjoyed himself too (in between his slightly fussy moments). We're looking forward to doing more events in the future.
