Touring Joara is coming up. Here's the information straight from the Table Rock Sports Car Club:

    Touring Joara 2016

Join the Table Rock Sports Car Club & Exploring Joara Foundation
on a European/Sports Car Tour and Poker Run

Follow in the footsteps of Explorers and Patriots while enjoying some
of North Carolina’s most scenic and challenging roads

Join automotive enthusiasts from all over the Southeast in touring the North Carolina Foothills and Mountains on October 15, 2016. This event is sponsored by the Table Rock Sports Car Club to benefit Exploring Joara Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports public archaeology in the Catawba and Yadkin river valleys. The Tour and Poker Run will begin at Catawba Meadows Park& Archeological Site, 701 Sanford Dr, Morganton, NC 28655 where you will pick up one card with your registration packet. There will be three stops on the tour where participants can check-in and pick up poker cards. The last card and Touring Joara poker prizes will be awarded at Hook & Anchor Restaurant at 3:30 pm. Touring Joara 2016 is limited to 100 cars, pre-registration is preferred but we will accept registration the day of the event if space is available. You may pick up your tour packets between 7:30 – 8:45 am, Exploring Joara Presentation 8:45 am, Driver’s Meeting 9:10 am, Tour vehicles roll out at 9:30 am.

Touring Joara 2016 will take participants through 4 counties on some of the most scenic and historic roads in western North Carolina. We will be driving roads the Overmountain Men traveled 236 years ago on the way to The Battle of Kings Mountain as well as Juan Pardo's expedition into the interior reaching the Native American Town Joara in 1567. This year’s tour will include roads such as Fish Hatchery Rd ["The Worm"], Hwy-80 ["Devil's Whip"], and again this year, except downhill, Hwy-226a ["Diamond Back"]. The Tour will take us by various points of interest including The McDowell Houses, The Museum of North Carolina Minerals, and The Berry Site where the Native American Town Joara & Fort San Juan Archeological Sites are located. Also the Tour will provide stunning views of Lake James, Table Rock, Shortoff Mtn., Lake Tahoma, and Mount Mitchell, not to mention some of the best fall colors you will find anywhere. Our last stop will be Hook & Anchor Restaurant, opening early for our group, where you can purchase a catered lunch from its sister restaurant Countryside BBQ.

At Catawba Meadows Park you will witness the continued construction of a new living history center that is a major project for Exploring Joara Foundation. This project will give visitors a glimpse into the distant past of Burke County and North Carolina. Exploring Joara Foundation has raised $150,000 to build two reproductions of Native American houses with a stockade fence and a garden so that you could see how the Native Americans were living in Burke County when Juan Pardo arrived here in 1567. This project is on-going and will eventually include a museum to house artifacts and an archeology trail. This is a very exciting project that will provide North Carolina with an important historical resource.

More tour details, such as accommodations, tour map, directions, and points of interests, will be provided upon registration. Also, registration will include a Touring Joara dash badge and a list of driving and traveling tips to prepare you for North Carolina mountain roads. Most of these items will be available at the tour check-in. Go to discoverburkecounty.com for available lodging.

Tour is rain or shine, unless there is a major weather event.
