5/7/2011 - Moonshine Rally (TSD rally)

The organizers of the Moonshine Rally have decided to go back to the TSD (Time Speed Distance) format instead of just a scenic tour. I have done this for the last 6-7 years and rallymaster Jon Saylor always finds some fantastic roads.

Starts in the blocked off streets of Elkin ,all sports cars welcome. Having a navigator is strongly encouraged.

The event is FREE but they will be accepting donations for Lupus research at the registration table.

Event website has all the info and pics from past years: http://moonshinerally.zoomshare.com

Organized by the Triad Austin-Healey Club

Kathy and I participated in this two years ago with three other Minis. Total of 99 cars were entered. Kathy drove and I navigated to a fifth place finish. Had a great time with the scenic roads and nice winery. Ask Minimark how difficult it was without a navigator.

Yep we had done it twice before with me driving and Joan navigating us to some very respectable finishes...... Joan had other plans that year and my testosterone said "you don't need a navigator", so I did it solo.... Did not go well at all and got turned all around before finding the route again. Needless to say, the results were not good at all but I still had a great time even though my manhood was reduced a peg or two. I will have a navigator this time...... or just follow Sandy... LOL :)

Bryan it truly is a great time!! The line up of classic and new automobiles is worth going for in itself. This is a well run event with fantastic roads and some very good fellowship with other car nuts before and after the event. The Rally itself is definately a team sport and great fun, TSD rallying takes good navigating, good driving and a lot of thought to do well.. The fact that the Barefoot's got a fifth place finish in their first Rally is no small feat, there are many serious rally people at the Moonshine and many that have done it every year from it's beginning with not even close to that kind of result. ;)

Was it beginners luck or will they up the anti even more and put themselves and the THMMC on the podium? :)

Anyone want to throw out any pointers for us beginners on the time part of it. Did you use GPS to kinda keep up with your avg. speed. and then
guess-timate time lost getting up to speed etc..
Didn't they give you some time in there to stop or something. ( Think I remember someone mentioning that last time )
Plus not everyone runs the same route. So the navigator needs to stay on there toes for directions on the paper handout..

They do build in some potty time (I think 10-15 minutes). We drove for over two hours before reaching the destination. We did have a GPS but used it only to identify the possible location of the upcoming turns that were on the directions sheet. The instructions give you the average speed that you should strive to maintain over certain sections but with traffic, wrong turns, and other delays, you tend to lose track of the time, speed etc. We just had a feeling that we were running too fast so we parked about 1/4 mile prior to the finish and waited about 10 minutes. Then we drove to the finish and were just minimal minutes off our expected time. No driver knows what their time length is when they start so it boils down to whether you feel that you have kept near the average speeds listed on the instructions. If Kathy had slowed down like I kept telling her, we would not have had to park for a few minutes. The roads, curves and scenery made it difficult to hold the Mini back. All Kathy could talk about later was the Porsche she had to pass on a two lane road.

hey!hey!hey! this is a *family friendly* forum, let's not be using testosterone and solo in the same sentence, OK!!

Besides, anyone who knows you at all *knows* you still got plenty o' manhood left even if it was reduced a peg or two ..

So who else is going??? And if you need any added incentive, check out the accuweather forecast for Elkin this Saturday ..

(seems as though the weather gods are playing favorable to MINI events so far this year .. the MOTD weekend was the best one weather-wise, ever .. )
