Route Leg 1 - Food Lion, Zebulon, NC to CPW's Restaurant, Greenville, NC
Here's the route map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=15503393541853350923,35.605281,-77.412237&saddr=114+Wakelon+St,+Zebulon,+NC+27597&daddr=2422+Stantonsburg+Rd,+Greenville,+NC+27834&sll=35.605281,-77.412237&sspn=0.003768,0.007628&ie=UTF8&z=10)

Jesse (02R53) has arranged a great lunch buffet for us at CPW's (http://www.cpws.biz/), an excellent restaurant in Greenville. This will let us get in and out fast. Menu will include a couple of pasta dishes, chicken quesadillas, salad, and tea/coffee for $12.95 adults, $6.50 kids. If a few people have a problem with the buffet, they can order off the regular menu - but if everyone did, we would run out of time and miss the ferry... please let me know if you will NOT be getting the buffet, so we can get CPW's an accurate count! If you're on the confirmed list, and do not tell me otherwise by Thursday April 10, we're assuming that you're buying the buffet for all members in your party and you will be expected to pay your share.

We should arrive at CPW's by 11:45AM.
Depart CPW's at 1:00PM

Route Leg 2 - CPW's Restaurant to Ocracoke, via Swan Quarter Ferry
Here's the route map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=15503393541853350923,35.605281,-77.412237%3B12940840039848318922,35.395236,-76.330108&saddr=2422+Stantonsburg+Rd,+Greenville,+NC+27834&daddr=35.648369,-77.419968+to:Swan+Quarter+Fry+%4035.395236,+-76.330108&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=11&via=1&sll=35.615442,-77.207108&sspn=0.241144,0.488205&ie=UTF8&ll=35.500928,-76.830139&spn=0.96595,1.95282&z=9)

Anyone planning to attend should book a reservation on this ferry ASAP - and do that before you book your hotel as the ferry is the most constrained resource - if you don't get on the 4PM ferry, you're not staying in Ocracoke that night... call 800-773-1094 for reservations!
Here's info on the Swan Quarter ferry. (http://www.ncdot.org/transit/ferry/routes/schedule/route004.html)

Ferry leaves at 4:00PM. We plan to be there 3:00PM. If we aren't there by 3:30PM we lose our reservations. Ferry ride is about 2:40 long, so we should be in Ocracoke by about 6:45PM.

Plan is to maybe get a quick photo at the lighthouse before dark, then get checked into the hotel, then go to dinner (dinner approximately 7:30PM)

The Pony Island Motel (http://www.ponyislandmotel.com/index.html) is our "official" lodging for Saturday night - because they look "nice enough", and have good rates, and have enough space to accommodate our entire group. The motel normally has a 2 night minimum stay on weekends - they've agreed to waive this requirement for us on April 12 - but you MUST tell them you're with the Tar Heel MINI Club! Their rates range from about $69 to $85. They do have some nicer "suites" available, but these still have a 3 night minimum - they will allow us to upgrade to those rooms for the difference if cost (rate for those is about $125 per night) IF they are available when we check in. Call them at 866-928-4411 for reservations. If you prefer other accommodations on the island, you're certainly free to do your own thing!

"Official" dinner spot will probably be Howard's Pub (http://www.howardspub.com). They know we're coming, but Saturday is their busy night and they can't reserve tables for us, so there will likely be a wait and we'll be seated as tables open up. If it's too crowded when we get there, we can split up across there and a few of the other restaurants nearby. Separate checks, order off the menu. Good seafood at several places including Howard's.

Route Leg 3 - Ocracoke to Big Al's Soda Shop, Manteo, NC via Hatteras Ferry
Here's the route map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=2686896236266423124,35.109440,-75.977670&saddr=Cedar+Rd+%4035.109440,+-75.977670&daddr=100+patty+lane,+manteo,+nc&sll=35.10964,-75.974965&sspn=0.007583,0.015256&ie=UTF8&ll=35.541166,-75.731506&spn=0.965466,1.95282&z=9)

There are a few places near the hotel to pickup breakfast, if desired.
Depart hotel 9:00AM

Drive down the island, line up for the 10:00AM ferry to Hatteras.
Here's info on the Hatteras ferry. (http://www.ncdot.org/transit/ferry/routes/schedule/route003.html)

If all goes well, and we all make that ferry, that puts us in Hatteras at 10:40AM. We'll stop at the lighthouse for 20-30 minutes, then will continue to the Bodie Island lighthouse for another brief stop and more photos. Then will continue to Manteo for lunch at Big Al's Soda Fountain (http://www.themefifty.com/index.html) at about 1:00PM.

Here's info on the lighthouses. (http://www.outer-banks.com/lighthouses.asp)

Route Leg 4 - Manteo, NC back to Zebulon, NC
Here's the route map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=2686896236266423124,35.109440,-75.977670&saddr=100+patty+lane,+manteo,+nc&daddr=114+Wakelon+St,+Zebulon,+N.C.+27597&sll=35.541166,-75.731506&sspn=0.965466,1.95282&ie=UTF8&z=8)

It's about a 3 hour drive from Manteo back to Raleigh - this should get us back to Raleigh by 5:00PM or so, and folks from points west can make it home by dark-ish.

Bring GMRS radios if you have them - as always, THMMC channel is 20 sub 20!

March 7th, 2008, 10:09 AM
OK Folks! We have about 17 cars committed for this run - we need a lot more to fill the ferry! This is gonna be a GREAT couple of days of driving a seeing lots of other people with WTF!?! looks on their faces...

Ferry space will start filling soon - if you're interested in doing this, NOW is the time to lock in - a couple more weeks and you may be too late!

Plan to link-up w/ MINI convoy @ intersection of US-264E & I-95 on or about 11:00AM of the 12th. This will save me 25-30 miles travel. Being a new kid on the block, so to speak, I would appreciate a heads-up call from Bilmey Cabrio on channel 20-20 as the convey nears my point of intersection. I'm looking forward to meeting you folks and sharing "MINI" war stories.

March 27th, 2008, 06:37 AM
That works! We'll call you. Sometimes the radios work well, and sometimes not so much. If you're on the side of the road prepared to merge in, we'll be a long enough "train" that you'll be able to get on with no problems. We'll be strung out over 1/4 mile when we go by.

April 5th, 2008, 10:39 AM
Update! See the first post for specifics on Saturday lunch buffet - and let me know ASAP if you do NOT plan to participate so we can have an accurate count for CPW's. If I don't hear from you by Thursday, April 10th, we're assuming that all members of your party will be purchasing the buffet and you will be expected to pay for your share. PLEASE don't leave me holding the bag on this!

April 9th, 2008, 01:56 PM
We're going over on Friday and will be staying at the Captain's Landing. We'll have our radios and will contact you for the time for Howard's Pub. Looking forward to seeing you again.

WOO HOO!!!! Tomorrow's the day! See everyone at 10 (except for folks who are meeting us along the route). I'll have map/direction copies for each car - so if you haven't already printed everything, you don't need to... unless you really want to (or want them in color - my copies will be B&W).

April 14th, 2008, 09:08 AM
I hope everyone had a good time - even with the rough ferry ride and the few individual incidents that occurred (but no wrecked MINIs and no injuries)... my family had a great time!

I posted a writeup on my blog...

I also created a category for this event in the Gallery - please add your best photos (but not ALL your photos ).

Thanks again to everyone who braved the seas on this adventure! Arrr, mateys!

Very nice pics!

Looks like a great trip. That quantity of Coopers on one ferry surely confused some fellow riders.

One ferry crew member said "At Least its not a Crown Victoria club".

Yeah, that was my favorite quote of the weekend.

:)Wonderful pictures. I'll have to keep an eye out to see if this event happens again.
Would love for the gang from HRMINI to catch up with you guys somewhere. Just missed the Blue Ridge trip too, but I'm sure there will be other events.
