Howdy all!

Is anyone here going to MOTD 2018?

I'll be heading out from Charlotte fairly early on Wednesday morning, coming back comfortably on Sunday morning sometime. Anyone want to join me on the trip to Fontana? I might take the long way and try to find some new twisty roads on my way there. A quick Google Map search turned up some interesting possibilities (especially if they fix the closed sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway).

It's always good to have contact info for some local folks, in case you need some help, a ride back, etc...

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Here's a copy/paste from another thread... putting the info somewhere more useful:

OK. I went to register and the apple pie run filled up before I could get there (3-4 hours) and I want something more than the Ice Cream run on Saturday, so here it is... something new for my (Texas) Metroplex MINI friends, my new Tar Heel MINI friends (Carolinas) and anyone who loves MINIs! After some ice cream on the scheduled Ice Cream run (1:30pm) I'll be leading whoever wants to go a bit south down to another great: Wayah Road! It will take us about 2.5-3 hours to get back to Fontana. We will be heading south down 28 to Franklin, west across Wayah and then back up 129 through Robbinsville. With a quick stop for gas in Robbinsville and maybe bathrooms in Franklin (depending on need) we should get back to Fontana around 4:30 or so... plenty of time to get to the farewell dinner (doors open at 5, but dinner and announcements start at 6)

THE UNOFFICIAL TEXOLINA RUN! SATURDAY, MAY 5 AT 1:30PM - MEETING IN BRYSON CITY, AFTER THE ICE CREAM RUN.

Here's a link to the map packet, so you will have my usual turn-by-turn directions:

Anyone and everyone is welcome (invite your friends). No sign-up is needed (unless you are doing the Ice Cream Run, then please sign up for that.

If you want don't want to be a part of a formal drive, but would like some great drives to have in your pocket when you go (to do at your own leisure, on your own schedule), please feel free to print off that PDF above and these other ones that I'm running on other days... There are turn-by-turn directions with lots of maps and descriptions in each packet, but it's always the last page that I go to when I'm driving... an odometer mileage for each turn along the way, so you know when your turn is coming up. A great drive condensed to one page.

Sunrise Drive around the Smokys (Wed & Thursday AM): The Dragon, the Foothills Parkway, Little River Road and Hellbender... great scenery and great roads. This is easily my favorite drive ever!

I'll be heading out Wednesday afternoon from Alton, VA, but I'm staying in Fletcher (right outside Asheville) that night and heading to Fontana Thursday morning. I'll see you on the Donut Run.

Aaron - if you loop up north from Charlotte taking the long way, head toward the Morganton area to take in 226 and or Hwy 80. They drop you up on the BRP around Mt. Mitchell and Little Switzerland. Both of those are very fun, twisty runs if you have never done them before.

Very nice! TY for the route suggestion. I'm thinking about getting up early on Wednesday and doing a chunk of the BRP, but I think it's going to depend on my mental state, energy level and the weather that morning. I also noticed that there are several road closures along the BRP (when I checked 2-3 weeks ago), but one might imagine that those were off-season road fixes and that they would try to be done with those before the spring seekers wanted to get on the roadway.

VETTESVET: I went to private message my contact info and cabin # to you (it's always good to know folks out there who live close to you) in case you need a parts ferry or a ride home. Your PM box is full. Clear a few messages and I'll send my info.

Hey Aaron... Check this one out...I promise you will be wondering how you can achieve the 35 MPH Posted Speed.... Just past Asheville Hook a Left and go south. You can wind around and end up at the Fontana if you meander a bit. I assure you this may just become your favorite new road. Hope to see you up there.

Very nice! If the weather is good for my commute to Fontana on Wednesday (and if they finish their off-season construction), I may take that chunk of the Blue Ridge Parkway that morning. It would be easy enough to spin off of the BRP and run up and down that road, just for fun.

If you ever find yourself in Highlands, NC, there is a wonderful 1 mile stretch of road that changes 1/2 mile of elevation in that time... loads of fun! I swear I saw my own rear license plate coming around one of those switchbacks!

Just a reminder guys. The Linn Cove Viaduct will be closed until May 24 for repaving bridge maintenance.

Yes Aaron, I know this section quite well. Did you find the big tree?

Big tree? No... but I think I use the intersection of Horse Cove Rd and the one you pointed me to so I can do a U-turn... never been down that road.

Wow... that is a big tree! 400+ years old!

I just checked the US Park Service map and I think I'm good for the chunk of the Blue Ridge Parkway I'm hoping to take... just south of Asheville to somewhere near Cherokee. It looks like they opened the road up, wrapping up winter construction projects (there were 3-4 construction blockages when I checked a few weeks back). I'll miss the Lin Cove Viaduct as it's on the north east side of Asheville. it turns my 3.5 hour drive into a 5 hour drive, but I've wanted to see that road for a while and never had the time.

Bob Padgett Poplar is just to the right when you turn onto the gravel. You will find stairs leading to a path into the woods about 200 feet up that road. Follow the trail 400 or so feet and you can't miss it. There's another beast up the mountain a bit from it you can see quite easily too if you dare hike up there. It's a beautiful spot for sure. It was spared by forest ranger Bob Padgett in 1966 who saved it from clear cutting. 20 foot girth. Good Guess, yes it is 4 centuries old now.

Hi there, Jason here. I did the Minis Slay the Sleeping Dragon last year, looking into coming up this year for MOTD. I would be leaving out from Fayetteville, NC Friday morning and will be headed that way!
