St. Patrick’s Drive Out The Snake Run
Saturday, March 21, 2015

According to legend, one of the many accomplishments of St. Patrick was to drive all of the snakes out of Ireland. Join me in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by taking on The Snake in North Carolina and Tennessee as we “drive out” one of the twistier roads in our part of the world.

The plan for this run is to start at the Lowe’s in Winston Salem bright and early on Saturday morning. From there we will loop around to Sparta for a stop for breakfast at Brown’s Restaurant. Leaving Sparta, we’ll take some twisty roads through the country until we intersect Hwy 421 and head up to Mountain City, the starting point for The Snake.

We’ll make a stop in Shady Valley, the midpoint of The Snake, for lunch at the Shady Valley Country Store. We’ll then head on up The Snake, cutting off just before we get to Bristol to loop back around to catch Hwy 321. That will lead us along the banks of Watauga Lake before we re-enter Boone. From there we’ll take 421 back into the Triad where folks will head off home.

Please note that this will be an all day drive. Just the seat time while driving will be about 6 hours. Add in time for stretch breaks, meal stops, maybe a photo stop or two, and pit stops for gas, and this will end up being a long day of motoring fun. So be prepared to get in some iron butt time in your MINI.

Starting Point: Lowe’s Home Improvement parking lot, University Dr in Winston-Salem
Wheel’s Up: ≈ 8:30 am
