MSSD 2020 – Gatlinburg or Bust!
This run is on Saturday October 10th.

Welcome to the Fourth Annual MSSD “Gatlinburg or Bust!”. This run is an extension of an informal group run done over the past few years, for those who want to drive through The Great Smokey Mountains and visit "Myrtle Beach of the Mountains". Gene Crouse will lead this run. He will need a good sweeper car. This route includes about 4:00 of driving, with several stretch stops to regroup, and a scenic drive through the western side of the Smokey Mountains.

We will start from the parking lot adjacent to the Fontana General Store, meeting at 8:30am and leaving at 8:45am. Please eat breakfast and top off fuel before we meet. Since this is intended to be a “low to moderate” pace ride, we want to make sure you can ride comfortably (not full and queasy). We will head out to the base of Fontana Dam and follow NC-28 on “Skull Cracker Run” (part of “Hellbender”, which is part of “Moonshiner 28”) to Deal’s Gap, the start of “Tail of the Dragon” on the North Carolina side. We can stop at Deal’s Gap to get stickers or use the restroom. there is not another restroom for a couple of hours. We will travel the length of the Dragon (318 curves in 11.1 miles) at a reasonable pace. We will stop for a short regrouping at the parking lot at the Tennessee end of the Dragon.

From the parking lot on the TN side of the Dragon, we will continue on US-129 to the Foothills Parkway to US-321, following that to our next stretch break at the Shell station in Townsend. You may top off fuel here if necessary. From here, we will leave US-321 and take Lamar Alexander Pkwy / Townsend Entrance Rd / Little River Gorge Rd / Fighting Creek Gap Rd through the base of the Smokey Mountains National Park to US-441 into Gatlinburg.

Once we reach Gatlinburg, we can tour as a group or individually. In the past, we've visited shops along the main road, visited some of the distilleries, and eaten lunch together at New Orleans Sandwich Company (Cajun food). Some are wanting to go ride go-karts. We will meet again at 2pm to start the drive back to Fontana. From Gatlinburg, we will traverse US-441 througbh the Smokey Mountains toward Cherokee. this route routinely gives beautiful views of scenery and wildlife, and even takes us through big weather patterns swings occasionally. From US-441, we will turn onto US-19 through Cherokee and into Bryson City just in time to catch the Soda Pops Run crowd coming into town. From Bryson City, you are on your own....
